The following is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System.
If this had been an actual emergency, the Attention Signal you just heard would have been followed by official information, news or instructions.

And the “search” box doesn’t show unless you’re on the “latest threads” page. What’s with that?

Whats really maddening is that you cant do comments for just one forum ... You can add Active Articles to your complaint!

Did We Fix Something That Was Not Broke?(FR) What you mean "We"?
Must be preventative maintenance. It's working well too.
It's preventing folks from maintaining the way they previously browsed this forum.

Are you comparing FR to a tacky salt and pepper shaker? In looks? In every sense of the word. There is no fluidity.
Its a hodgepodge that the many here has come to feel comfortable with. About 3 or 4 yrs ago, John wanted to make changes that lets us, the user, update how we viewed FR but the loud minority forced him to revert back.
Its in dire need of a facelift.

I noticed it looks different but at least there is finally a search bar at the top of the screen.
Adapt. Suck it up!

Change for changes sake...not good. Changes made involve more difficulty to navigate than older model. Dont fix what aint broken.
Too many detours to get where I want to go. You may think it wasn't broken but this forum was not easily navigable. You just developed muscle memory on where everything is.
Just like you will when you grow used to where everything is now.
Personally, this place needs a revamp design wise like no other web site out there.
I work exclusively in the on-line industry and have seen my share of well put together designs and cohesive websites and FR doesn't sniff that description. I have discussed with John Robinson at length about it and he feels handcuffed because of the vocal minority refusing to accept even convenience changes

I work for an IT company that develops web apps and I agree that the FR 'form factor' could stand for a serious redux. However, there's plenty of (very good) web forum applications out there, and inventing one from scratch wouldn't be the best idea. The biggest problem would be the conversion, right?
You are so right about everyone being used to where things are on the site, but at the heart, it's not very navigable at all. Just look at how many times people post articles (or vanities-GASP!) in Breaking News or such.
I would say that the main way most of us consume this web site's material is by LATEST MESSAGE as this displays what people are most talking about.
That said, targeted content delivery is sorely lacking on FR. As you said, we've all just become accustomed to how it's done it previously, and any change that diminishes that is not well-received.
As a side note, I seem to be getting a lot of THESE today:
Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /tag/articles:latest/.
Reason: Error reading from remote server
