February 8, 2008 -- After a savage, bone- snapping beating, young Yovany Tellez had barely the strength to speak his final words to his mother: "I want to go to sleep."
Yesterday, a Manhattan jury convicted Zahira Matos, 23, of Harlem, of murder, potentially dooming her to life in prison.
Her drunken lesbian lover had actually dealt the boy's death blows, but the jurors found that Matos had, unimaginably, done nothing for five hours or longer as her moaning 23-month-old son lapsed into a coma and died.

Yes..I remember this story - but I cannot remember exactly when it appeared.

I read that article today and my heart broke all over again.

This hurt me to read it. Poor baby boy. My grandchildren are just a little older and I’d kill the monster that did this to them. I would go to jail, but they would die. Slowly too.

If she gets the sentence she deserves, spaying won’t be needed.
February 5, 2008 — She took her son to the hospital when he had a rash or a fever. But murder suspect Zahira Matos said she didn’t think he needed help after her lover broke the child’s leg and covered his body in bruises.
“He was moaning a little,” but 23-month-old Yovany Tellez Jr. didn’t seem like he was in very much pain, Matos told jurors yesterday, trying to justify the fact that she didn’t call 911 until it was far too late.
Matos, 23, said she’d gone out to get beer, and when she came home, her drunken girlfriend, Carmen Molina, said she’d hit Yovany and thought his leg was broken.

It sounds like they had solid reasoning (/s)...the boy wasn’t using the potty like they wanted him to (not many 23 month old boys do).
They wanted to save their money on diapers so they could buy more beer and drink together while ignoring this precious little life.
I wish there were better ways to save these kids before they wind up in the news for dying terrifying deaths.
An autopsy found the infant suffered broken ribs, a broken leg and a pulverized liver. He was bruised extensively over his body and was covered in feces when found.
The third paragraph was as far as I could get before clicking away. I can’t imagine his mother hearing his cries and not helping him. She needs to be drawn and quartered, along with her lover.
I don’t remember hearing about this, and I read a lot of news sites on line throughout the day.
what really gets me is the witch that actually administered the beating gets less time.
I think they both should get life.
I can’t believe the one who actually physically did this to the boy is only serving 15 years!!! I’m not saying the mom is innocent in any way shape or form, but why is she facing LIFE when the murderer will be out in 10 years?
You gotta love the wording:

That makes me sick. She doomed her son to a brutal and painful death. But she is doomed? To prison?

The boy's unclothed corpse was covered head to foot with some 40 bruises. His ribs and right ankle were broken, and his internal injuries included a cut to the liver that nearly severed the organ in two.
