ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has asked coach Lane Kiffin to resign.
According to Mortensen, Davis sent Kiffin a letter in which he asked Kiffin to step down. In fact, Davis actually provided Kiffin with a resignation letter that he wanted Kiffin to sign and return to the team.
Davis and Kiffin have butted heads almost from the beginning of Kiffin's tenure as head coach, particularly over Kiffin's staff of assistants. Most notably, Kiffin wanted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after this season and Davis refused.

The only way the Raiders become anything close to the team they once were is when Al Davis dies...
Some days I'd like to help Al achieve that very goal. Today, is one of them.

After interviewing with Davis, Green was asked what he thought of Al, and he replied, “He is who I thought he was.”

That and Jim Mora’s “Playoffs?!?” rant are the two greatest post-game rants in NFL history.

The only thing more stupid than asking for Lane’s resignation is offering the job to Dennis Green.

In related news, Raider fans have sent a letter asking Al Davis to sell the team.
As of press time Mr. Davis had yet to respond...

Absolutely. I think Al Davis has officially run out of brain cells.

That and Jim Moras Playoffs?!? rant are the two greatest post-game rants in NFL history. Drew Rosenhaus' "Next question" press conference with TO is among the best too.

Whatever happened to commitment to excellence. It still exists.......on Al Davis' balance sheet.

Too bad the coaches don't really let themselves get mic'd up on the sidelines anymore. No more stuff like Lou Saban's "They're killing me, Whitey, they're KILLING me!!" or John Madden's "Watch everything!"
Of course, no one in the NFL has quite reached Earl Weaver's plateau, yet.
