Redskins Expected to Name Fassel as New Coach (Zorn OC and Ryan DC)
washington Post ^ | Wednesday, January 23, 2008; 5:21 PM | By Jason La Canfora

The Washington Redskins are expected to name Jim Fassel their new head coach and Jim Zorn has emerged as the top choice to be their new offensive coordinator, sources said this afternoon, but no deals have been finalized.

The hang-up is that the Redskins also want to name Rex Ryan as the team's new defensive coordinator, sources said. Ryan has been the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens for the past three seasons. But the Redskins have been stymied in their attempts to hire him because the Ravens still retain contractual rights that allow them to block Ryan from taking another defensive coordinator job.

This shows you how truly classless Dan Snyder is. He should have at least giving Greg Williams or Al Saunders a chance to interview for other head coaching jobs.

I hope Dallas hires Greg Williams.

What it really shows, (and how terribly predictable) is that Dan Snyder’s pick would be a name that was familiar to the most casual of NFL fans.
To heck with who might be the rising star, if he hasn’t accomplished something elsewhere, which splashed his name across Snyder’s pathetic consciousness, he stood no shot at all.
“Fassel? The guy from the Giants! Yeah, he beat us like a drum a bunch of times, he’s a genius.”
“Jim Zorn? The guy from the Seahawks? Used to throw the bombs to Largent? That was so cool! I want an offense like that! Oh, he’s retired? Well make him the offensive coordinator!”
“I want Buddy Ryan! Man, those 85 Bears were awesome! Oh, he’s 73 and been retired for 12 years? Damn. A son? Yeah! Get me him!!!”
I feel sorry for Redskins faithful who have to root under this buffoon.

Dan Snyder gets a free pass yet Jerry Jones is the devil for firing Tom Landry.

No one gave Snyder any hell for firing Norv Turner after the Giants game in 2000.

Good hire. Belicheat was a failed coach with the Browns who got a second chance. Fassell took the Giants to a Super Bowl.

Steve Bisciotti of the Ravens fires Brian Billick, states "There's a Hall-of-Fame coach out there and it's our job to find him" and proceeds to take a chance on John Harbaugh. Now Harbaugh may be a bust, he may be the next Bill Walsh, or something in between, but at least the Ravens are trying to move ahead.

The Danny, OTOH, spends three weeks looking for a coach and comes up with the retread Fassel. Now I'm not knocking Fassel - he took the G-Men to the Super Bowl, and the playoffs a couple of other times besides that run. But.... he was fired as the O-Coordinator in Baltimore and didn't even get that position in KC when he interviewed for it. Anyone who sees this as anything more than a one-year place-holding hire until Cowher or some other big name becomes available, I'd like to hear your opinion.

Not to dispute your accurate point, but I've just read "The Draft" and "Next Man Up" and the most delightful part of each were the gratuitous digs the authors took at that giant retard (Snyder).

How sad that must be to be a loyal Skins fan and know this idiot could be at the helm for another couple of decades, degrading a once proud franchise with his "football acumen", so sure of his genius. Trading away draft picks year after year, signing over the hill Free Agents.

I wouldn't wish a plague like Daniel Snyder on my worst enemy. He's ruined so many great rivalries with his incompetence.

Nobody gives Snyder a free pass, at least they didn’t before he brought Gibbs back, and they won’t again now that Gibbs has retired. Basically we all figured as long as Gibbs was willing to put up with him maybe he’s turned over a new leaf. Now with the 4 interviews for Williams and hiring Fassel (who isn’t that good) we’ll go back to smashing on Snyder too.

Why would anybody give anybody hell for firing Turner? his record stinks. People gave the Chargers hell for HIRING Turner.

He was fired in week 13, after the Giants game before the Dallas game, of the season. Had he quit, he would have been labeled a quiter for leaving in the middle of the season like Petrino.

If he’d quit in mid-season he would have been a quitter. Getting fired in mid-season just means the boss is really sick of your crap. Mediocre coaches getting fired in mid-season isn’t unheard of and doesn’t necessarily mean the owner is a jerk. Unless of course they’re firing the guy that invented the 3-4 defense or something Jonesian like that.

Redskin radio is reporting (01.25.08) that Jim Zorn will be the new offensive coordinator. That would be Jason Campbell (Passer rating 77.25) third coordinator. My guess is that Zorn will want to run the West Coast Offense, so Campbell should call his agent.

Not only was he fired, but the story behind his firing was far from flattering.

Evidently he was spending all his time working the phones, networking and trolling for another head coaching job, while virtually ignoring his actual job. Predictably, the Ravens' offense was the biggest joke in the NFL.

Snyder is dissatisfied with where the offense is going under Saunders, so he wants to hire this guy?! I'd rather have Norv Turner back, and that's saying a lot.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I'm not optimistic.

That would also be something like Campbell’s eighth offensive system in the nine seasons going back to his Freshman year at Auburn.

I'm a Giants fan and think this is a decent hire. As a rookie head coach in 1997, Fassel was coach of the year and won 11 games with Dave Brown, Kent Graham and Danny Kannell as his QB. He went to the Super Bowl in 2000 and the playoffs a few other years when he had a decent QB in Kerry Collins. He probably would have gone deep into the playoffs in '02 (?) when the refs let the game end on a defensive penalty against the 49ers-the FG would have been a chip shot.

He fielded decent teams with Kannell, Kent Graham and Dave Brown as QBs-then gets stuck with Kyle Boller. Poor bastard. I would like to see what he would have done with Eli.

My wild prediction, if forced to decide between Coughlin and Spags, Jerry Reese keeps Spags.

As a Giants fan this is great news. Fassel is a loser, and the division is now filled with coaches that can’t win the superbowl. So the Giants will not lose anything in terms of the quality of their coaching staff versus the Redskins. Unless the Giants defensive coordinator leaves, that would hurt.

Trading away draft picks year after year, signing over the hill Free Agents.

Like Deion Sanders?

Like Adam Archuleta?

Like Dan Wilkinson?

Like Dana Stubblefield? Or even Mark Brunell?

And of course we cannot forget the shear genius move of hiring Steve Spurrier The Ol' Ball Coach at $5 mil a year!

And I’ll bet there’s some not on your list.

I’m a draft junkie, and I couldn’t imagine anything more saddening than to know my team only had 2 picks every year. That really does seem to reek of Snyder though. I’m sure he’s unfamiliar with the college prospects so he places little or no value in them. One man’s “personality” poisoning an entire team.

I think all head coaching positions are filled (unless there is an opening in Oakland).. Probably next year he will be a coach somewhere
