1. Fred has since said that the law has been interpreted and enforced in a way that was not intended, and he said that he'd have voted against it if he knew this at the time. In other words, he had the decency, honesty and humility to admit an error, and the wisdom to learn from it. Kind of like Reagan, who signed an abortion legalization bill in CA, and later came to regret and renounce that decision.
Reagan later worked hard to reverse the effects of that law he signed. Perhaps Fred, exhibiting similar regrets, honesty and wisdom, will do the same with CFR.
2. Jorge isn't on the ballot - thankfully. He assuredly wouldn't get my vote.
Maybe none of them are a conservative. We thought GW Bush was one, but he was for Amnesty, signed Mc Cain Feingold and every piece of spending legislation that crossed his desk until the Dems. took over. Fool me once, shame on you; foole me twice....well, you get it. If I look at all the candidates, the only conservative I see is Duncan hunter and he has disappeared from the radar.
Wonderful. The truth is, you can smear any candidate with votes on bills that are multi-faceted, and that come up for floor votes on a myriad of sub-issues. It gets tiresome trying to shoot down every claim.
Thompson’s game plan is listed in plain simple terms. If folks don’t want to believe what he says that’s fine, but I would at least appreciate them acknowledging that their hack doesn’t make the promises Fred has.
Fred knows what Reaganism’s core values were. Have any of the other candidates made it clear they do? Uh no.
The day this jerk is ZOTted I’m pitching in another $50 to the Freepathon and another $50 to Fred.

I agree with you but myth has taken the place of truth on this subject. He has not been a liberal, but he has not been a rock solid conservative either. Fred was a moderate. That’s fine so long as everyone understands what they are getting. My problem is that they are choosing to ignore it.

Sally Quinn is a noted writer and the wife of Ben Bradlee, long-time editor of the Washington Post. You can’t get more to the center of the Liberal Establishment in Washington than this power-couple. And on June 26, 2007, she penned a telling bombshell in the Post on Fred Thompson.
Vice President Dick Cheney is “toxic” and “has the potential to drag down every member of the party—including the presidential nominee—in next year’s elections,” she advises, so the movers and shakers in the GOP must convince President Bush to force Cheney to resign.
“Until recently, there hasn’t been an acceptable alternative to Cheney…,” she admits. “Now there is.” (And by now you can guess who.)
“Everybody loves Fred,” gushes Sally. “He has the healing qualities of Gerald Ford and the movie-star appeal of Ronald Reagan. He is relatively moderate on social issues. He has a reputation as a peacemaker and a compromiser. And he has a good sense of humor. He could be just the partner to bring out Bush’s better nature…”
I had never known Sally Quinn to be so concerned before about the fortunes of the Republican Party, and I am shocked that she allows for even the possibility of a “better nature” in President Bush. Be that as it may, we can see what’s going on here. She rightfully sees Fred Thompson as a marshmallow—oops, I mean “peacemaker” and “compromiser.” As the sitting Vice President in 2008, he would have the inside track on getting the GOP nomination. And liberals could rest easy, knowing their power is safe whether the Democrat or the Marshmallow Republican wins in 2008.
I'm not a fan of the media, but I agree with that assessment about him being a moderate, a peacemaker and a compromiser. That is what some people want. But it isn't usually what FR is looking for.
In 1977, Viguerie worked on a project to raise money for Sun Myung Moon’s Children’s Relief Fund, which reportedly only received 6.3% of the $1,508,256 raised. $920,000 went to Viguerie according to New York State charity auditors. [5][6]
Viguerie sought the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor of Virginia in 1985, but did not receive the nomination at the GOP state convention.
Asked by Campaigns and Elections in May 2000 what his immediate goals were, Viguerie answered:
“To use the Internet to involve Americans in the political process, to help conservatives gain an advantage over the left. To fight against government’s use of power, to fight for individual rights and responsibilities, and to fight to extend the blessings of liberty throughout the world.” [2]
Writing in The Nation, David Corn noted that Viguerie “raised money for Judicial Watch” and is associated with Larry Klayman, who is a conservative lawyer and activist and who was the Republican candidate for the US Senate from Florida in 2004. [7]
Viguerie has long been associated with conservative activist Howard Phillips through creation of the Moral Majority in 1979.
I, too, was fooled by Bush. But you know what, he wasn't 100% bad. He fought our enemies, cut taxes a bunch and appointed a couple of good Supreme Court Justices. What would Gore & Kerry have done?
The point is that if you stay home because you don't see the perfect candidate, then you're falling into the trap set by the Leftist Media - namely, to have the Dem win by fracturing the Republican Party.
IMHO, every Republican/conservative whose favorite candidate doesn't get nominated has to ask themselves just 3 questions:
1) Who would I like to see nominating 1 or 2 Supreme Court Justices, plus dozens of federal judges, a less-than-perfect Republican or Hillary/Obama?
2) Who would I like to see in charge of our foreign policy, a less-than-perfect Republican or Hillary/Obama?
3) Who would I like to see sending tax and spending bills to Congress, a less-than-perfect Republican or Hillary/Obama?
Honestly, on some of the issues there's not a whole lot of difference between the Dems and several of the Republicans. However, not on every issue. On the important ones - security and judges, each and every Republican will be better than any of the Dems. Are you going to let Hillary/Obama walk into the Oval Office unopposed, just because your utterly perfect nominee didn't get the nod? For the sake of the country, I truly hope that there are precious few people who hold this point of view.
