Amanda Overmyer – Back In The U.S.S.R. – Meh. Pretty much what you’d expect from her.

Kristy Lee Cook – You Got To Hide Your Love Away – Meh. Her arrangements just never do it for me. Nice girl, but it’s time to say goodbye.

David Archuletta – The Long And Winding Road – Straight up crooning. Good voice. Nailed it.

Michael Johns – A Day In The Life – Tough song to truncate, so the arrangement was a little awkward. Mostly good vocal with some glaring bad spots.

Brooke White – Here Comes The Sun – My girl Brooke. Another good vocal. It’s all right? It’s better than all right. :-) Oh, but gosh, stop being soooo nice to those judges. That exchange went on too long.

David Cook – Day Tripper – Rockin’ guitar back. He’s never been my cup of tea, but his style works well with this arrangement of Day Tripper. Not sure if I cared for the Frampton voice box gimmick, but it was minimal enough. My personal favorite of his work thus far.

Carly Smithson – Blackbird – Takes a chance with a ballad. Borderline. Looked a little pained.

Jason Castro – Michelle – Safe (except for having to learn a little French). Adequate.

Syesha Mercado – Yesterday – My girl Syesha kicked it up a notch or two. Very emotional. Really took ownership of the song this week. Loved it!

Chikezie Eze – I’ve Just Seen a Face – Wow, it’s like two different songs with the harmonica break. Chikezie’s callin’. First part OK; Second part was better.

Ramiele Malubay – I Should Have Known Better – Goes with a hat and more up-tempo song. Adequate. Best notes are the ones she belts out. Walking was a bit awkward.

My rankings for tonight
1. Syesha
2. Chikezie
3. Brooke
4. David C
5. David A
6. Michael
7. Jason
8. Carly
9. Ramiele
10. Amanda
11. Kristy Lee

My rankings overall
1. Brooke
2. Syesha
3. Chikezie
4. David A
5. Carly
6. Jason
7. Michael
8. David C
9. Ramiele
10. Amanda
11. Kristy Lee

You almost got me. I like the Beatles, but even Simon suggested that another week was perhaps too much.

And an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm.

That was in 43's *first* inaugural speech?

Prescient. That gave me cold chills. Thanks for posting that, Wolfie!

Interesting night of performances.

Ranking them:

1. David A.(Great voice. Going to be really tough to beat.)
2. David C.(He has really found his stride)
3. Chikeze(Another good performance)
4. Syesha(Her best performance. Wish she had stayed with the softer voice rather than pushing at the end of the song.)
5. Carly(Very talented but I’m not always happy with her performing choices.)
6. Amanda(I like that she knows what she wants to put forward and does it. Not much range but she relies on energy.)
7. Jason(Thought it was pretty good vocally. I don’t see him having the range to go much further though.)
8. Brooke(Bad song choice.)
9. Ramiele(Did okay but I’d rather she sing ballads.)
10. Kristy(Also okay but probably not enough to keep her from going home.)
11. Michael Johns(Tough night for him. Thought it was his weakest performance. Maybe I’m just getting tired of him.)

Who should go: Kristy(Good voice but she’s just never been able to step it up. Gets the nod over Michael because he’s been better from week to week.)

Who will go: Kristy(Disappointed I’m not going to get to see her perform a legit country song.)

LOL SJ! I half expected Bono to show up in preparation for the telethon.

I just had a horrid thought. If David A wins, do you think they'll have him duet with Lennon?

Oh, I don’t know. I think Monchichi would look adorable hanging from the rearview mirror or bobbling in the back window.

Or a hood ornament!

Quick thoughts about last nights show...in a word...disappointing. It was so "meh" for me as nobody was great. The rundown:

The good

David Cook - Day Tripper - great song and great performance. As usual, Simon does not get "rock". Sure, the channeling of Peter Frampton might have been indulgent and over the top for a 1'30" song but what was the last major song you heard someone use the voicebox? Bon Jovi's Living On A Prayer circa 1987? Very good perfomance.

Carly Smithson - Blackbird - it was pretty good. The original was a lot more "staccato" sounding which, I think, made the song great. Carly had it running all together which worked for her but was distracting to me as a fan of the original. That being said it was a good vocal.

The mediocre

Archuletta - The Long And Winding Road - I listened to it without watching it and I thought it could be great it just wasn't. He sang it too high and it was very breathy. It was just okay. the original from McCartney is just so pure and his voice has a lot of depth and texture and Archuletta was a million miles away from that...but the stupid tween girls with unlimited texts plans love him so. Honestly, I think he could be great but he has some issues.

Syesha - Yesterday - ditto here. I wanted to love it but simply listening to it was just okay. again, sang too high and no depth or power behind it. Meh...

The Aussie - A Day In The Life - Simon thought the arrangement was a mess but for what he was trying to do, he did it pretty well. It was just a very complex song to boil down to a minute and a half. I like his voice and the Vedder tone made it work okay. He has yet to have that "wow" moment outside of Bohemian Rhapsody.

The bad

Amanda - Back In The USSR - Decent for what it was but it's getting old...

Quick aside on that song - In high school (around 1984) I went to "Model U.N." and our team was assigned the Soviet union in the Security Council. We wanted to have fun with it so we intentionally showed up late and came in with a boom box blasting that song. Ahhh, the memories...

Kristi Lee - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away - just not very good. She's still smokin' hot though...

Brooke White - Here Comes The Sun - Boring. Simon was very right when he said Syesha sang what Brooke should have sung. I think the tone of her voice is much richer and she could have sang the hell out of that song. bad choice.

Jason Jack Johnson Castro - Michelle - It all sounds the same to me. He's a Jack Johnson wannabe and I get tired of that stuff after about 3 songs. He needs to do something different but I'm not sure he can. Hallelujah was several weeks ago and he's still feeding on the carcass.

Chikeze - I've Just Seen A Face - what the hell was that? 60's, soul, bluegrass, harp fusion? Did not get that at all. He can sing but that was a mess.

Ramiele - I Should Have Known Better - bad arrangement, bad bad, bad vocal...just bad. Her whiny, needy butt needs to find a therapist.

Who should go home? Any of the bad ones except Brooke.

Who will go home? Kristi Lee.

Bad idea to go back to the Beatles this week... the contestants already picked (or should have) the songs that best suited them last week, and it showed. For the most part, those who bombed last week recovered, and those who did well last week had off nights. Really, really tough to guess what will go down in the elimination show...

Amanda - The song has 4 or 5 notes, and she missed ALL of them. Calling it speaking on pitch would be too kind. The other contestants would do well to learn from her stage performance and rationale for song selection, however. D+

Kristy Lee - A thousand times better than last week, bot that we're talking about a particularly high standard there. Next to Amanda, she's a great singer... compared to the ones coming after her, she was just "a'ight". Solid, but enough to save her? I'm not sure. B-

David A. - After last week's bomb, he rebounded well. Still has the "scared rabbit" look up there, and the tongue thing drives me nuts. But he sang the song really, really well, and the "tweens" love him. A-

Michael - The ASPCA called about that cat you strangled. And, while making Paula look even dumber than usual is fun, dude, if you can't hear, you can't sing. Use the monitor. Simon was right -- this was just a mess most of the way through. D

Brooke - Well, song selection and consistency is how she got up to #1 in my rankings, and she had none of that this time. She looked uncertain and it just came across as corny and amateurish, which is very surprising. Still, with most of the rest of the top tiers bombing, this won't hurt her too badly. C-

David C. - Solid, but not stellar. Good song for a concert, but I wouldn't want to rush out and buy the single. He didn't hurt himself with this one, but I don't think he helped himself much, either. B

Carly - Safe song choice, sang it very well. But I can't watch her and those demonic eyes. She is literally ugly while she sings, and it's a major distraction. B

Jason - Oddly enough, the French part was the only one he sang well. The rest of it was so corny as to come across as farce. His following will likely save him from this train wreck. F

Syesha - Performance of the night, and by a country mile. There may be a technical quibble or two with the singing, but she completely "sold" this performance and really looked and sounded like a true star. A

Chizeze - Stop picking obscure songs -- it's a good strategy once in a while, but the reason this one is obscure is because it wasn't one of Sir Paul's better efforts. Tried to recapture last week's magic, and failed to do so. Not as bad as some others, but he really needed to build some momentum. C-

Ramiele - Really, really not good. It was very corny and "cruise ship" quality. A couple of big notes ain't going to cut it. She should go back to ballads and deliver on them -- the problem isn't the tempo, it's the energy level she fails to put in. It's painful to watch good talent be wasted so. D-

Rankings for the night:

  1. Syesha
  2. David A.
  3. Carly
  4. David C.
  5. Kristy
  6. Brooke
  7. Chikeze
  8. Amanda
  9. Michael
  10. Ramiele
  11. Jason

Overall Rankings after week #2:

  1. David A. (+1)
  2. Brooke (-1)
  3. David C. (n/c)
  4. Carly (+1)
  5. Michael (-1)
  6. Syesha (+3)
  7. Chikeze (n/c)
  8. Ramiele (-2)
  9. Jason (-1)
  10. Kristy Lee (+1)
  11. Amanda (-1)

Bottom 3: Ramiele, Kristy Lee, Chikeze
Who Should Go: Amanda
Who Will Go: Chikeze

Bad idea to go back to the Beatles this week... the contestants already picked (or should have) the songs that best suited them last week, and it showed.

They get a list to choose from each week. This week they got a different list than the first week of Beatles according to this interview.

American Idol 7: David Hernandez Elimination Interview - Hernandez was able to block out all the superfluous things from his mind. That includes all the male stripper story. He doesn't mention it specifically, but alludes to it. He's stayed away from TV and the internet and focused on his singing. He attributes his downfall this week to a poor song selection, at least in the judges' eyes. Next week, David was planning on singing “Yesterday” or at least that's what caught his eye on the new list.
