January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
*****did maria know christina - the wife?***
Have not seen any reports one way or the other - BUT - this is probably the most important piece of the puzzle.
Their contacts and conversations would lend a whole lot of light.
i assume there is an email trail that authorities can access between the two.
that sheds some light on their relationship.
we don't need to know the why, the how, the ifs, ands, and buts, we need to realize this was MURDER and an ABORTION all at the same time....
A Cpl is NOT an office. He is an NCO...he is enlisted. The news media got it wrong calling the accused an “ superior officer”.
***But I dont know how the wife is pregnant story fits in with all this..****
Mmmmmmm interesting. Perhaps he joked about it in a MAN CAVE where his buddies knew of the rape accusations and that the accuser was pregnant..the use of the word *wife* would be a *yuck yuck*.
Some of us speculated that he & his wife were either planning to adopt or kidnap Maria’s baby and the plan went South.
Got our Marine Times today and there was a lengthy article about this case. There will be a lot of information to surface as time goes along. She was to appear at an Articl 32 which is similar to a Grand Jury hearing which happend prior to charges being brought forth for a possible GCM.
These two Marines were admin types in the same office. I think before any conclusions are made the investigation will have to show just what went on there. I don’t know the facts but I would bet there is a lot the public does not know yet.
Add to that, how and why she was at the Cpl’s house is a question. while there is no doubt the young woman is dead, it is not known if this was a premeditated murder or the result of a fight that ensued and the Cpl got scared and ran after LCpl Lauderbach was killed..accident or design?? Bottome line is the Cpl is in heap big trouble! And the whole thing is beyond sad.
Sheesh, what if the baby *wasn’t* Laurean’s?
After looking at and hearing this a couple times, it's hit me. What's wrong about this statement is that it's bassackwards. They had every reason to be on his trail. This had everything to do with the military word. Everything about this had everything to do with the military world.
Good processing, sodpoodle!
****we don’t need to know the why, the how, the ifs, ands, and buts, we need to realize this was MURDER and an ABORTION all at the same time....***
I think we do need to know -
WHY the investigation into the young woman’s accusations took so long to resolve.
HOW are rape victims and perpetrators treated at all stages of an investigation on military bases.
IF the investigation included protecting the unborn.
AND could the murder of Maria Lautenbach been avoided BUT for the actions of the Military command.
We need to realize that our society has reduced the value of life, born and unborn.
Maybe I won’t be to popular for saying this....
Maria is dead. There is probably not one single Marine in Laurean’s unit that imagined that Laurean was going to brutally kill a woman and her unborn child and then set the bodies on fire and bury them in his backyard. That’s a stretch. You just don’t assume something so horrific. I guess this will be a very harsh wake up call to assume the absolute worst, WORST case scenario from now on.
Hey missie;)
Why haven’t you finished typing that Camp LeJeune transcript?
Get on it!
sod
I’m still catching up, but.
Speaking of him showing up/not showing up for work, don’t forget, the Corps doesn’t consider someone missing for 30 days.
“””.officials don’t know how long the truck has been there, but IN THE VERY NEXT SENTENCE the reporter asks the clerk and the clerk says.... three weeks.”””
Two weeks ago (New Year) Laurean was tending to a fire pit in his backyard.
I think the report was changed to FIVE DAYS that the truck had been in the hotel parking lot.
Latest I saw was it was there since Monday (yesterday).
I’ll bump that, deb.
Confusing ain’t it?
This sad story is full of *what ifs*. Easy to ask why didn’t her Marine buddies or the Sheriff look for her sooner.
There is nothing to suggest that her life was in danger until her body was found. Once again, hindsight is 20/20.
Wonder why we have not heard from Marie’s Marine colleagues. Surely she had some female friends in addition to Sgt.Durham. They might shed some light on the relationship(s) she had with Laurean & any other boyfriend(s).
