Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Have they said anything about Sgt. Daniel Durham, the guy she was staying with?

Somebody needs to drill these troops not to “dip their pens in company ink”.

Only that they spoke with him to discuss the note that he had found. Maria withdrew $700- from her account....maybe Laurean told her they were going to run away together and that’s how he got her to his house, and that may be how he just happened to have her PIN #. The military assumed, after seeing the note and the money that was withdrawn, she left on her own.

From WRAL:

Christina Laurean delivered the note from her husband to authorities last Friday. Her parents said she was at work when Lauterbach died, and she tried to convince her husband to meet with authorities about her death.

Did the wife KNOW that the woman and her baby was buried in her back yard? For weeks?

Hello! She admits she knew and even painted the garage.

A Colonel Dave Sokoloski is providing this info. He is a Chief Judge of investigation or something like that. Sorry, didn’t catch the exact verbiage. Also a Lt. Col. Curtis Hill

From NBC17:

The vehicle has been moved from the lot and has been taken to an undisclosed location for forensics. The crime scene has been cleared.

We are dazed and confused because we are learning of discrepancies in Maria’s stories and we cannot bring ourselves to blame the victim. But Maria’s vulnerabilities
are changing my take on this case.

Laurean adamantly denied any sexual encounter, rape or consensual, in the workplace and is portrayed as calmly waiting for a resolution.

What makes Lauterbach’s story suspect is that she waited from the March 26 sexual encounter and then the April 11 sexual encounter until May 11 to report either one. She denied violence, coercion or blackmail.

Then the first preg. test was negative - a subsequent second preg test was positive, at which time she testified that Laurean may/or may not have been the father.

It also appears that the steps taken by the Marine Corps. were thorough & careful, for what was a very tenuous situation.

It’s conceivable that Lauterbach, who was *tired of Marine life* made one final, fatal contact with Laurean - at his house. That must have been when someone, or two snapped.

I still don’t trust that wife.

He has family in Mexico. Well, we know the Dog won’t be going to get him if that’s where he’s at, and Mexico certainly isn’t going to extradite him.

Also, they aren’t 100% certain that Maria wrote the note that was left at her home/apt. that her roommate found. The doo-doo is getting deep.

I've been wondering about that. I was hoping they would do handwriting analysis if it was penned. If it was printed out, check the printer. If it was online, check where the email originated from. I'm glad they are questioning that part of the story.

This scenario has crossed my mind once or twice. He promises her he’ll leave his wife, and they will run away together. She trusts him. Goes to his house or is taken there, leaving her car at the bus station. Once inside, she’s killed. Maybe this is why reports were such that others had the impression the two seemed to be talking and were perhaps even friends. Maybe this is why she didn’t think to remind admin to reinstate the MPO. Maybe this is why she was considering dropping all charges?

Girlene:

Do you remember when we said that if the baby was missing -that would tell the story?

Now it’s clear that the baby’s paternity is going to be determinant.

I still don’t trust that wife.

K, the Marines called Maria’s parents on Dec. 17th asking if they had seen her. Mother reported Maria missing on the 19th to Ohio LE.

So was the note hand written, IamHD?

Sodpoodle, I agree, the paternity will fill in a clue, but there is so much fog in the reporting that just came out. If she "says" she had consensual sex on two occasions, why would the military progress with a hearing on rape?

I'm wondering if there was some loose deal that went bad. He's telling buds on base for a few months that his wife is pregnant. Her last conversation with her mom is about adoption (with the mom encouraging it). In that conversation, she argued with her mom. IOW, she was indicating on the 14th she wanted to keep it. She ends up dead in Laurean's home on the 15th.

I'd be asking the wife to take a polygraph, about now, with regard to what she knew and when.

They didn’t specically say, although the Colonel stated that the writing was “similar,” to Maria’s, I am assuming that it was written rather than typed.

I remember reading somewhere that the Marines knew she was missing/gone sometime around Dec. 15 or 16th. Maybe this was based on Dan Durham turning in info from the note that was left in his apt by Maria (allegedly). This info was not turned into sheriff's dept. When I read it, I thought it was more bad reporting. Dec. 17 was Monday morning, and she didn't show up for work.

***If she “says” she had consensual sex ***

She described consensual sex...but she still filed rape charges.

As in the Scott Peterson, Mark Hatten, & other cases of murdered pregnant women...the emotional dynamics are in the stratosphere. I cannot relate, but there’s a pregnant woman who has had sex with a married man, whose baby may be his...and a former marine-wife with a toddler. Can you even imagine the range of anger in that triangle?

Laurean has an uncontrolled lust for Lauterbach.
Lauterbach is mad as hell that he got her pregnant and ended her military career.
Wife is jealous, betrayed and plus, her husband is about to be jailed or drummed out of the Marine Corps.

Maybe she wanted to run away, took out money, left the note, and then went to his house to try to convince him to come with her? A man might be angry if his mistress showed up at his house, demanding that he leave his wife. But I don’t know how the “wife is pregnant” story fits in with all this, unless he was thinking of Maria as his future wife or something.

The whole consensual/assault story and timeline is very confusing!
