Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

apologies if this a repeat - but the wife had motives for murder or acquiescing. Hubby was about to be booted out of the Marines if charged & found guilty of rape OR subject to losing income for Maria’s child’s support. Maria’s career as a Marine was also at risk.

It’s always possible the three of them met to discuss how to resolve the crisis and her demise was either pre-meditated or an emotionally charged discussion escalated into a violent confrontation.

Due to the amateur burning, burial and blood cleanup, I’m inclined to consider the latter.

Good questions. Between the sheriff, NCIS, and now the Marine spokesman, a lot of those questions haven’t been answered. I think they are trying to get some of those answers straight between themselves.

1. Think so, but don’t know.
2. Don’t know. According to one report, it happened at the base. Probably no rape kit.
3. I think that’s close. She reported rape in April, don’t know how far along she was. Could finding out she was pregnant have been the trigger to report?
4. Investigators/prosecutors had talked in the week before she was killed. Military indicated the process had a chance of going forward. Her family indicated she was dismayed about prospects and was dropping charges. Which is true?
5. I don’t know if she named Laurean. That is really strange why they didn’t start looking at him immediately.
6. Wife present? A neighbor indicated he saw Maria’s blue car where Laurean’s wife normally was the week before Christmas. IOW, maybe the wife was gone when she was killed?
7. Don’t know. The neighbor indicated he saw Maria’s car at Laurean’s house and that he drove the car.
8. Laurean had to have dropped off the car at the bus station. When, who knows? Maybe he bummed a ride from the bus station?

Neighbors saying today that the Laureans had an outdoor party...sounds like it was recently. Neighbors also saying that the Mrs. might have been involved in the painting. As per reporter on FOX.

Outdoor party? Wierd. If she was involved in the painting, could he have cleaned it up enough for her not to be suspicious? From this link, she was supposedly gone around the time of Maria's death.WITNTV

The neighbor told WITN News he saw Laurean driving Lauterbach's car the week before Christmas. The neighbor says Laurean parked it at his home, during a time in which Laurean's wife car was not there.

He has to pretty nervous about now. This also from the link: At an 11:00 a.m. news conference, Brown said the FBI is also using electronic billboards across the nation to get the word out.

“How to know your husband may have murdered someone-—”

1. You come home from a trip and he’s painting a room in the house that didn’t need painting. The same color.
2. The carpet in one area is super clean and wet.
3. Their is a fire going on in the back yard with odd odors.
4. Vultures are hanging out in the crepe myrtles.

Appreciate the ping—your theory combined with the known facts (so far) makes sense. Please keep me on your pinglist.

LOL. Maybe I should print that out and keep it handy, just in case (not). Re. your list - #1, 2 and 4 are feasible in my life. Number 3 would be a no-brainer something was fishy. Haven't seen him lift a shovel, burn trash, or do any outside work for quite a spell. :-)

A Marine accused in the rape and murder in North Carolina could be headed to the Texas border.

Authorities are searching for U.S. Marine Corporal Cesar Armando Laurean in connection with the death of fellow Marine Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach.

Not clear - he does have two other aliases.

I believe US policy is that military enlistees who are LEGAL aliens have expedited citizenship access.

Not sure if ILLEGALs are even permitted to join the US military - seems like that would also be illegal.

ANYONE???

For a search of the pregnant Marine that started out so slow, the authorities are really ramping up the search for her murder suspect. AP in Boston Globe

"Federal authorities were posting billboards nationwide with the picture of a Marine wanted in the slaying of a pregnant colleague, and the sheriff announced a $25,000 reward Monday for information leading to his arrest.

Authorities are looking for Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, wanted in the death of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, who had accused him of rape. FBI officials said the first billboards with Laurean's photo should be posted Monday in Columbus, Ohio, and Las Vegas."....

These posters should also show his presumed likeness with mustache and beard, and should also go up near border cities with Mexico.

Two great observations - married a US citizen would provide him permanent resident status (so he wouldn’t want to divorce her) and he could have grown facial hair and head hair - probably doesn’t have access to a shave & haircut.
