Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

I note there are only the two of us on this thread;

Just got on... WRAL is reporting a sighting of the fugutive -

A member of the general public saw Laurean around midnight "two or three states away from North Carolina," Brown said. He did not specify in which state the sighting occurred.

The witness spent some time with the suspect and said Laurean appeared to be traveling alone, the sheriff said. He described the sighting as "transient" in nature and expressed hope that Laurean would soon be in custody.

Brown urged members of the public not to try to detain Laurean if they spot him.

Based on the evidence of the crime, Laurean "could be a dangerous and violent person if he was put in a corner," the sheriff said.

From WITN:

The Shreveport, Louisiana Times reports that U.S. Marshals contacted their local police after they got word Laurean may have gotten off a Greyhound bus in Shreveport.

Stay with WITN News and witntv.com for more on this developing story.

Here’s hoping he decides to resist arrest with violence and has a weapons malfunction.

Not confirmed that is is *armed* but he certainly is dangerous.

What are the gun restrictions for active military? I thought everyone had a side arm? NO?

Given that Marines are trained in hand-to-hand combat I would consider his lack of a weapon a moot point.

The reporting on this case is all over the place.

First the hearing for rape was to convene in a few days (from Dec. 14), then she had dropped the case.

The reports are that they were on friendly terms, but there were several protective orders issued. The family says she was harrassed and scared and thus moved off base.

I’ve seen reports that the roommate said she left a note that she was leaving (around Dec. 14), some things of hers were missing, so he assumed she had left on her own.

There’s a bus ticket that was purchased by someone. They first found her car at the bus stop, then they found her car at a fast food place (maybe the two are connected in a complex). Then I saw reports that her car was found on a Monday, but it hadn’t been there over the weekend. Huh?

The mother’s comments about being bi-polar and a compulsive liar - I saw one explanation in one report that she had made those statements as part of an investigation (NCIS?) because she was trying to paint a full/clear picture of her daughter. She never expected those comments to be made public and taken out of context. Huh?

It doesn’t sound like anyone (sherriff’s office or the military) was seriously looking for her before the family showed up and started asking questions.

Last I heard, there was a sighting of the dude around midnight somewhere, last night, but he hasn’t been apprehended.

All weapons are kept in the armory on base, civilian weapons can be kept at home unless you live in base housing then they must be stored in the armory as well.

More confusion. From Jacksonville Daily News, Civilians weren't made aware of protective order for Marine

"Civilian investigators have said a military protective order — similar to a restraining order, but authorized by the commanding officer in charge of the Marine being restrained — existed for a pregnant Marine against the Marine accused of killing her, but they were never made aware of it by anyone from Camp Lejeune."....

...."At a press conference later Saturday, Brown and District Attorney Dewey Hudson said neither they nor the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were aware of the existence of the MPO until late last week, when detectives found it as they searched Lauterbach’s car.

The order was issued in July and expired in September and said Laurean could not come within 1,000 feet of Lauterbach, Brown confirmed late Saturday.

The Daily News asked Paul Chiccarelli, a civilian in charge of NCIS at Camp Lejeune, during a press conference Friday whether a military protective order had been issued on the behalf of Lauterbach against Laurean. He answered that he was not aware of such an order.

Brown said not only was Chiccarelli unaware of it, neither was Col. Adele Hodges, the base’s commanding officer.

Brown said he joined Chiccarelli in meeting with Hodges on the base Wednesday to talk about their investigation into Lauterbach’s disappearance.

“I spoke to Hodges about the case on Wednesday, and I am confident she did not know about it,” he said late Saturday."...

This is freaking ridiculous. Noone knew about the protective order? They had to find it in her car?

Christmas was rainy and about 65 degrees. It was raining on and off right before Christmas. And in the 60’s. My neighbor mowed his grass the day before Christmas during a break in the rain. The “burn ban” was not so much necessary in Jacksonville because my neighbor’s yard was still sprouting at the end of December! Hence, if someone made a fire....not likely anyone would call the authorities. And since that couple lived on the outskirts of Jacksonville, they fall almost into a “county” position as opposed to a “city” one.

I’m seriously wondering about a couple, that shares a home, PAINTING walls and ceilings without the other one knowing. Painting to cover up massive blood splatters. If my husband painted anything in our home I would have been aware of it....maybe even helped. How did this wife not know???? Something is not right there.

The parking lot where Maria’s car was found is sandwiched in between the bus stop and a fast food restaurant/bread store(I think it’s an outlet bread store). That’s why there is confusion there.

Very good synopsis, Girl.

It doesn’t sound like anyone (sherriff’s office or the military) was seriously looking for her before the family showed up and started asking questions.

This is a very important point. Ed Brown has been the Onslow County Sheriff for ages. Ed Brown knows, without a doubt, who's authority takes precedence but at least he finally took the bull by the horns.

And they only found it after she had been murdered....

Apparently the “Criminal” in Naval Criminal investigation service applies to the way they do their jobs and persecute innocent Marines.

Had she been accused of a massacre in Iraq this Young Marine would be alive today.

You seem to have information others don’t because I don’t think that is the case here at all.

And they only found it after she had been murdered....

From the article, ..."“I would also like to answer a question that has been asked by members of the media regarding a military protective order,” Brown said in a press release he distributed Saturday. “It is clear that neither NCIS, the base commander, nor I knew that a military protective order existed. I only learned of the existence of a MPO late last night, about midnight. The order was located by my investigators while they were inventorying property that was seized from the vehicle of the victim via a search warrant. "

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! How did everyone lose that paperwork on base? She had a copy in her car, but nobody else knew about it. Wouldn't that be part of the paperwork for the upcoming hearing for rape? And just how did the media get those comments that her mom had made as part of an investigation so quickly? How did they have access to that?

This is another very important point, Girl. And just another reason I love you so much. That’s bullshit. Chickarelli contradicted this in the news conference yesterday. I posted the link to that conference somewhere on this thread.
