Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Thanks - Now for the satellite image, the slightly yellow spot is laid over the atm in the parking lot of this satellite photo. Note - the grassy area is now a construction site and the atm faces that area along with the drive thru at Burger King next to the grassy spot. Photobucket

Awesome pic! Is that main road where the green arrow is, Freedom Way, NC 24, LeJeune Blvd (the various names for that highway)?

Girlene,
That is Freedom Way, 24 changes names frequently evidently ;)

If you look at the map, Camp Lejeune with the exit ramps, that is the main gate, her cell was found right outside that somewhere.

Another awesome pic. Yes her cell phone was found along the road, NC 24, near Camp Lejeune main gate, by a stranded motorist. The stranded motorist used it to call for help probably. But they also called Maria’s sister (whose number was likely stored). It was Maria’s sister who told the stranded motorist to turn the phone in to the police.

So I would guess someone threw it out of a car while driving. Maria would not have thrown her cell phone out being that far along in her pregnancy or if she was planning on leaving town. Now was it thrown out during an abduction, tossed to get rid of any trace, planted as a false clue? It makes no sense to plant it there; the murderer would have thrown it in a trash bin somewhere. I think it was tossed during some form of forced abduction/disagreement with whoever was in a car with her.

The ATM, Maria’s house, the Christmas party at Camp Lejeune, and the tossed cell phone are within very close proximity to each other. Would a cell phone keep it’s charge from Dec. 14 through Dec. 20 if it was not used in between?

Yes, the cell phone still being usable on Dec. 20 makes me wonder about when it was dumped. Curious. Have fun in the rain and give a report back later. Latest on return of Maria and baby to her home town, Body of slain area Marine brought home for burial

Maria Lauterbach's remains are delivered to a Dayton funeral home by pallbearers from the Marine Corps.

..."Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Vandalia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery.

The family has requested two caskets, one for the slain 20-year-old woman and another for her unborn baby.

"Maria would absolutely want that," her mother, Mary Lauterbach, had told the Dayton Daily News last week.

Lauterbach's father, Victor Lauterbach, is an Air Force Reserve master sergeant in the 87th Aerial Port Squadron, which is part of the 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson. Lauterbach also is survived by three sisters and a brother."....

NC 24 from Jacksonville to Morehead City is named Freedom Way.

By the way for some great NC barbecue/chicken/shrimp check out Smithfields BBQ on Western Blvd. It's on your left going from NC 24 toward US 17. :-)

Oysters and hush puppies also on the menu? I've been away from the east coast for 40 years and miss it mucho.

Settled for Hardee’s after my hands thawed out enough to hit their drive thru. Gosh it was COLD, RAINY and I am still frozen 35 min later.

We had 100+ at any one given time and probably another 50 or so heading back and forth to cars to keep warm. There were plenty of interviews, camera’s and a visit from the Sheriff in the parking lot while we were out. Lots of Horn Honking etc. Some went down to check out the WBC (UG’s - Uninvited Guest) and said YES they were there.....but, police had streets closed and with the rain were talking mostly to themselves.

I am sure there will be highlights in papers and on tv news soon. Got to get warm ;)

Hush puppies, yes. Oysters, no. Their focus is BBQ but many of us like shrimp or chicken with it. :-)

My Dad knew where on base to harvest oysters and he’d shell ‘em and my Mom would deep fry ‘em.

They the UG’s really came to Lejeune with the wrong agenda, it was planned all around this murder and didn’t go over too well.

Here's the Justice page for La Prensa:

Entering Laurean in the 'Busqueda de Google' field should be one good way of tracking news on the fugitivo in the future.

Well, it’s about time, Mexico.

They should have placed the reward amount in the title, imo.

Thanks for posting this. :)

Just for the record, I found this and thought it was interesting (2nd entry).
http://www.soldiersperspective.us/2008/01/11/

Some thoughts: Laurean enlisted in 2004, was naturalized in 2003. I am going to assume he was naturalized as part of an delayed entry enlistment.
