Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

CL’s fingerprints HAD to have been found all over taht car or else he wouldnt have been charged with it.

WHY... if they were, was he not looked at earlier. Its my recollection that the car was found a few days before his name was brought into this.

I’m not sure when the car was found. I thought it was either about the same time or after Christina brought the note to authorities. Good point on additional charges that could be brought up under the UCMJ.

Your posts are showing up now. I’m guessing on the car, they haven’t gone to the trouble of making the case about it. The DA said more charges might be added later. As stupid as Cesear has been throughout his little coverup, I doubt he wiped down all his fingerprints. If he was driving that car, I’m sure he left some evidence if the authorities thoroughly check it out.

I’m trying to make out the GUND dog in the picture. Which way is the head/paws? Looks like there’s a lot of different styles out there. Is this a baby type gift? Do the numbers on the bottom of the sign look like a price maybe?

OK that will take some re-positioning and zooming to see it. The green arrow is the pawn shop, to the right is the grassy area (now construction) next to that is Burger King. The atm is the little speck in front of the grassy area/Burger King. With front of machine facing the drive thru.

Here's a picture of some of the events, locations. The ATM that Maria visited on Dec. 14 is not on here yet. If someone knows how to modify, they could add the new points. Have all the addresses been posted somewhere (ATM's) and Maria's address? Might be interesting to see possible trip paths and what makes sense.

1 is her residence and if you come out of there to the south hang a left the atm is less than a half mile on the left. I drove it tonight. It took me with little traffic to drive from ATM to the street into Midway Park less than 4 min, from there to Western BLVD and Marine Blvd another 22 (cops and traffic) from that intersection it took me another 20 to Laurean’s....again without much traffic, I would imagine on a Friday around 4:30 or so it would be much busier.

I can locate the atm on this map, but kinda stuck w/out needed software here on laptop. Anyone else?

Laurean detail misreported

Lauterbach wasn’t force to withdraw money from ATM Cesar Laurean did not force the woman he is accused of killing to remove money from her account Dec. 14, as far as investigators know, authorities said Friday. Several news media outlets including The Daily News incorrectly interpreted Laurean’s Thursday indictment on a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Laurean, a Camp Lejeune Marine corporal indicted on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, who was pregnant and had accused him of rape has been on the run since Jan. 11 when he left notes with his wife, Christina Laurean, saying he buried Lauterbach’s body in the couple’s Half Moon community backyard. Lauterbach did remove money from her account on Dec. 14 the day authorites say she died. That money has not been recovered, and investigators believe Laurean robbed her dead body of the cash. That is where the robbery with a dangerous weapon charge and subsequent indictment stems from, authorities said. The indictment states that Laurean took Lauterbach’s cash and Fort Sill National Bank debit card Dec. 14. An 18 person grand jury concluded enough probable cause existed to charge Laurean with robbery with a dangerous weapon for taking cash money from Lauterbach after her death and also trying to use her bank card later. Thanks for the info, lyn..Here's the link Laurean detail misreported . After reading the indictment, it was obvious that a reporter made a mistake about Cesear forcing Maria to remove cash from the ATM. Glad they finally corrected it. It appears Laurean did not get the cash he wanted on Dec 24. I think he tried twice, within a couple of minutes of each other. I wonder if both attempts were unsuccessful.

...."Laurean was also indicted for attempted misdemeanor financial transaction card fraud. Investigators said Laurean held onto Lauterbach’s bank card and tried to use it 10 days after she had been killed.

He tried to use her card to remove $500 Christmas Eve. This was the “suspicious activity on her bank account” originally reported by The Daily News on Jan. 10. “We believe Laurean attempted but was unsuccessful in removing $500 from Lauterbach’s account on Dec. 24,” said Capt. Rick Sutherland of the Onslow County Sheriff’s Department.
