Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

The Sheriff, who accompanied Greta when the shoe was discovered, did obtain a search warrant for seizing the shoe - as ridiculous as it sounds - he realized he needed one.

Yes, but the sheriff obtained the search warrant after discovering the evidence. If he didn’t have permission to go on the property, or a search warrant, the shoe evidence just might be inadmissable at any trial. They probably have enough other evidence to get a conviction if they ever pick up Cesear. Did you see the part of my post above that the throat may have been cut post-mortem????

From ABC news, Fugitive Indicted in Fellow Marine's Murder

...."Capt. Rick Sutherland told ABC News that authorities have interviewed the friend seen in the Lowe's videotape three times, and that he is considered a "cooperating witness." "....

That's the first I've heard of that but NOTHING that I learn at this point will surprise me.

Who knows if that part is true, since it was not released officially, but how disgusting is that? By the way, why would Laurean write more than one note? Reports say that the wife, Christina, turned in more than one note to authorities. Strange.

The friend in the Lowe’s video is a “cooperating witness”. Now there are at least two - Christina and the Lowe’s guy.

..." no one has been able to pin down how long Laurean's truck was parked at the hotel in Morrisville.".....

I assume that Laurean paid for the truck's gas for cash in the final hours he had it...how full was the gas tank? would there be any gas station cameras that captured him filling up?

Most vehicles have a range of 400+ miles. Jacksonville to Raleigh is about 150 miles. So it is possible that he had not purchased fuel since leaving Jacksonville

FIY....picked up a copy of the Lejeune Globe in the lobby, the Col Hodges will relinquish her command on Monday. She is headed for Arlington VA for a position there. Which means they will have a new base commander Monday. Wonder if he or she will pick up the ball and run with it.

No mention whatsoever of Laurean in this dated Jan 24th.

***the shoe evidence just might be inadmissable at any trial***

Sad but true - and it was all caught on video;( Ironic, that if he had just seen it from the neighbor’s yard - and executed a search warrant - it would be admissable.

The post-mortem injury looks like wifey’s work. I just have that stubborn feeling - that the letters and the storyline are all clean up efforts by Christina.

True. I can't figure out why the authorities didn't know they no "right" to be on that property. It's not like this wasn't their first day on the job.

Well, I'm not going to go that far with the wife. If he is caught, then we may know more. Cesear deciding to write more than one letter about what went down is odd. I hope they are doing handwriting analysis on all these "notes" that have been left/mailed. After leaving at least a couple of notes with the wife before he left, mailing 2 - 3 letters from the road, this Cesear dude sure is verbose.

Sticking with this crime for a while. Does anybody know how to blow up, darken the white sign in Maria Lauterbach's car? I believe that is a hand written For Sale sign in the back window on the left. On the other side is a fuzzy animal/blanket? I'm curious if a phone number can be read on the For Sale sign.

Wow, good observation!

On my screen it does looks like "FOR SALE".

Do you think Maria's parents are selling it?

When I get home I'll see what I can do.

Funny the indictment didn't mention Maria's car.

Was there ever a VIN given out for Laurean’s truck or Maria’s car?

I had to put on some strong reading glasses and back away from the screen before it became clear. No, the parents aren't selling it with crime scene tape on it. That was taken before it has been released. The photo was taken in a parking lot, either at the sheriff's dept or crime lab type place. Here's another photo which shows both Maria's car and Cesear's truck.

Maria wouldn't have been driving around with that sign up in the back. I don't know if she was selling it, but what a handy thing to put up in the car. It makes it seem more reasonable if someone sees it sitting in a parking lot for a long time. They think someone's parked it so they can sell it. Plus the sign looks hurriedly penned. There appears to be more writing below the FOR SALE lettering, but I can't make it out with the reflection and how light it is. Any ideas what the blue and white thing is? It almost looks like a baby blanket or a cozy for a car seat. She thought she was having a boy. But why would it be in the rear window blocking her view?

I cant wait for the day she is charged. This is a serious outrage that she is still acting like the “poor wife” who didnt know her husband was a psycho.

If anything, I hope she faces some military charges. The ones below are all pretty much valid even if she DIDNT have anything to do with the murder itself. Those charges go on for days!

Such as:

UCMJ Article 78 — Any person subject to this chapter who, knowing that an offense punishable by this chapter has been committed, receives, comforts, or assists the offender in order to hinder or prevent his apprehension, trial, or punishment shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

UCMJ Article 82 — (a) Any person subject to this chapter who solicits or advises another or others to desert in violation of section 885 of this title (article 85) or mutiny in violation of section 894 of this title (article 94) shall, if the offense solicited or advised is attempted or committed, be punished with the punishment provided for the commission of the offense, but, if the offense solicited or advised is not committed or attempted, he shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

UCMJ Article 107 — Any person subject to this chapter who, with intent to deceive, signs any false record, return, regulation, order, or other official document, knowing it to be false, or makes any other false official statement knowing it to be false, shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

UCMJ Article 134 — Though not specifically mentioned in this chapter, all disorders and neglects to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces, all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, and crimes and offenses not capital, of which persons subject to this chapter may be guilty, shall be taken cognizance of by a general, special or summary court-martial, according to the nature and degree of the offense, and shall be punished at the discretion of that court.
