Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Yeah, I caught the wording. Parsing words. Parsing words. They might as well say it and get it over with.

So do you think this is why they said they weren’t sure if the baby had been born? Depending on the amount of burning the bodies were exposed to or level of decomposition, maybe they just couldn’t tell? They’ve left the possibility out there with the wording that they don’t know.

Wow. He was gone before investigators had a chance to find the body. Maybe this was what he was doing those 2 1/2 days he told his commander he was meeting with attorneys. So the military didn’t think it was important to tell LE that he might be an obvious suspect in Maria’s disappearance, let him take time all that time off to make his escape plans, and now are answering no more questions.

More from CNN on Cesear's trip.

..."A law enforcement source told CNN Tuesday that, in addition to the letter he left for his wife at their house, Laurean has mailed her three others.

One letter is postmarked after Laurean left their North Carolina home on January 11 and drove to a motel in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, telling her he would be on the road, the source said. He wrote where he was leaving the truck and described the motel he was staying in, located near a mall the two had visited, the source said.

The letter was postmarked from Raleigh-Durham, the source said.

In each letter, Laurean wrote that he loves her and cares deeply about his 18-month-old daughter. In one letter, he addressed his daughter directly, in a sort of farewell, the source said.

Also on January 11, Laurean boarded a bus departing Raleigh for Houston, which would make the tip of a possible sighting around that time in Shreveport, Louisiana, erroneous, the source said.

Laurean arrived in Houston before 5 p.m. January 12, a Saturday, the source said, adding that authorities have evidence that he made it to a bus station there.

In Houston, Laurean mailed two more letters to his wife and bought a bus ticket costing about $170 from the Tornado Bus Company to San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

The bus driver told authorities that Laurean identified himself as Armando Ramirez, the source said. Laurean probably arrived in Guadalajara Sunday, the source said.

The source said Laurean received wire money transfers from Western Union before he left Houston, but would not say from whom.

The money mainly went to pay Laurean's attorneys, the source added.".....

...."Police believe Lauterbach was killed December 14, the same day she bought a bus ticket for travel on the following day. But in the note provided to police by Laurean's wife, the corporal said Lauterbach had killed herself December 15."...

Following info in this article on CNN
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/01/22/missing.marine/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

SOURCE in article tells of the letter from Raleigh to wife, telling her where the truck is, going to be on the road, arriving in Houston by 5pm (this is the only greyhound bus to get there by that time leaving on a Friday), wire transfer picked up in Houston, 2 letters to wife and daughter, then he took the other bus to Mexico under the name of Armando Ramirez (I think it said)....been looking on myspace to see if he set up another acct to keep in touch. Couldn’t find anything after looking at 40 pages...sigh.

It was a similar thing with his myspace accounts. The first one named him as Cesar. The second as Armando.

I didn’t see it, either. I was assuming he was taking most of that time off work to make plans, decide what to do, etc. He made it easy to find the truck, didn’t he? He told his wife in the first letter.

My goodness, I thought Tornado had been shut down. I’m sure I heard that - after that Arkansas crash when several people were killed. That was just recently.

1) was there a description made by the "cousin" in Guadalajara of the current appearence of Cesar.

2) Is Cesar now eligible to join a gang or drug cartel with status, having killed an American service person.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Missing Marine Cesar Laurean, wanted in the slaying of a pregnant colleague, visited relatives in Mexico last week, a man who said he was his cousin told The Associated Press Tuesday.

CNN first reported that Laurean had briefly stopped by the liquor store of Juan Antonio Ramos Ramirez in Zapopan, just outside Guadalajara. Speaking to The Associated Press late Tuesday from his store, Ramos Ramirez said Laurean walked into his store last Monday or Tuesday and the two cousins exchanged about 10 minutes of small talk about their respective families.

Laurean then told Ramos Ramirez, whose mother is Laurean's sister, that he had to get back to two friends waiting outside.

Days later, Ramos Ramirez saw a television report that Laurean was wanted in the U.S. for killing 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach.

Authorities have said they suspected that Laurean fled to Mexico, but the comments from Ramos Ramirez were the first public confirmation that the Marine had been in the country.

JACKSONVILLE - Investigators hope a pair of tattoos will help find the Marine accused of killing a pregnant comrade last month and then disappearing just before her body was found.

Relatives who live just outside Guadalajara, Mexico, told The Associated Press that Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, 21, visited them last week. He has been charged with murder in the death of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday released new photographs which show that Laurean has a tattoo on his left arm of a phoenix, a bird in Egyptian mythology rising from ashes, and a large tattoo on his right arm, possibly of a human skull layered over another image.

Additionally, investigators said, Laurean has a small mole on the left side of his face between his lower lip and chin. The photographs are thought to have been taken within the past eight months.

Investigators hope the new information and wanted posters translated into Spanish will assist in the effort to find him.

Laurean may be using the aliases Cesar Gudino, Cesar Sanchez, Cesar Armando Laurean-Ramirez or Armando Ramirez, according to the FBI.

Authorities launched an intensive search for Laurean after Lauterbach's bludgeoned and burned body was found buried in the backyard of Laurean's Jacksonville home. Laurean's abandoned truck was found last week behind a motel near Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Lauterbach had accused Laurean of raping her; Marine officials were investigating when she disappeared in mid-December.

Juan Antonio Ramos Ramirez spoke with The Associated Press late Tuesday from his store in Zapopan, Mexico, confirming Laurean walked into his store early last week and the two cousins exchanged about 10 minutes of small talk about their respective families.

Laurean then told Ramos Ramirez that he had to get back to two friends waiting outside. Ramos Ramirez told AP that he saw a television report days later that Laurean was wanted in the U.S. for killing 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach.

The comments from Ramos Ramirez were the first public confirmation that the Marine had been in that country.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to his arrest. Anyone with information concerning Laurean is asked to call the FBI tip line at (800) 225-5324 or submit tips on the FBI's Web site www.fbi.gov.
