Missing (Pregnant) Marine Dead, Authorities Say
KWTX ^ | 1/11/2008 | n/a

January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.

They said she’s buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.

They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.

Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."

Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.

She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.

Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.

Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.

Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.

Since the wife is back on base now, does she still have to cooperate with outside authorities?

Oh no, she’s all in it now. It doesn’t matter if she lives on base.

Hmm...What are you thinking?

The thought occured to me, what if he was forcing her to run away with him (and his wife?) to Mexico? That way she wouldn’t be able to pursue the rape charges. He may have forced her to write that note, and go get money. Then back at his house, maybe she resisted the plan, and thus the tragic ending.

Thoughts?

I wonder if there was a typo in that....typing a “t” instead of a “w” would change the whole thing.

I don’t think I realized that was the same interview.

Yes, she could NOT have been friends with him for four years, unless she was from his hometown, originally, because he hasn’t been in for four years.

but there are over 1000 pages and probably not in the time range, or pertaining to Laurean...a useful reference however...

Too many TV crime mysteries - twisted logic.

Is it possible that the Laureans had pressured Maria to let them adopt the baby - in exchange for dropping the rape charges and money to cover her expenses?

I know that’s a stretch - but we have a Marine couple murdering and cremating a pregnant Marine colleague.

I don’t watch TV crime shows, LOL!

Another interesting thought about the adoption.

FBI checking missing Marine leads in South Texas

"...Onslow County, North Carolina, Sheriff's Captain Rick Sutherland says authorities are aware of reported sightings of Laurean in South Texas and are following up.

He says the Houston field office of the FBI has been very busy..."

From that CNN link, ...”Christina Laurean told police she was at a Christmas party for her husband’s Marine unit during the late afternoon and evening of December 15, Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown told CNN. Her husband did not attend the party, she told authorities.”

Well, how convenient of an alibi for December 15 for Christina. I wonder what her alibi for Dec. 14 was if that’s when the murder occurred? If Sheriff Brown is telling this kind of information about Christina after the authorities say they think Maria was killed on the 14th......well, it kind of indicates maybe they aren’t buying it.

Her parents said Christina was at work. So which is it?

Whoa, SHE was at the party but he wasn’t???? And it was for his unit? How weird is that? Everybody would have been asking where he was.

So did she know he wasn’t going? What kind of excuse would he give his wife to have her go to his Christmas party and let him stay home????? If my husband said he wasn’t going...I wouldn’t have gone without him.

Maybe she was going to meet him there. He never showed. She figured out Maria was not there as well. She went home and found them at her house.
