January 11, 2008)--Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
They said shes buried in a shallow grave, for which investigators are now searching.
They identified the suspect in the case as a Marine officer whom she accused of sexually assaulting her.
Police earlier were planning to interview a man who lived with her and said he would answer questions that "will shed a lot of light on the case."
Authorities said again Friday Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham isn't a suspect, but police believe he's the last person to speak with the Marine.
She disappeared Dec. 14 ahead of her expected testimony in a military investigation into her claim a senior officer had sexually assaulted her.
Court documents show the investigation went sour amid inconsistencies in the woman's story and allegations that she's bipolar and a compulsive liar.
Search warrants show she was facing a possible discharge from the service.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when she disappeared.
Just posted at CNN........
“A warrant allowed authorities to search Western Union records.
Authorities said in the accompanying affidavit they believe missing Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean and his wife, Christina, received a transfer of money between December 10 and January 12, but did not elaborate further.
In asking for the warrant, sheriff’s detective John Dubois said the record search would help establish probable cause by revealing “information that will aid the investigation in establishing necessary facts to prove the crime of murder, to include the date of death, the manner of her death and facts that will assist identifying her killer.”
Dr. Baden was talking about the possibility—but that was all I heard—so I wondered if anyone had watched the whole segment. I rarely watch Greta, and not for long if I do.

No problem, MizSterious. That was one angle I was interested in as well and had followed reporting about Lauterbach’s note.
Handwritten and being sent for analysis together with the note left by Cesar Laurean that his wife found.
Is there more to this than a rape and murder case?
Good Lord!
Wonder how much money?
What was the intended purchase?
Wonder what they owned or expected to own that was worth money?
I found it hard to believe Maria was murdered for $700 - but I’m not going to type what I’m thinking.
The Laurean’s seemed to be doing OK financially, to have a nice house with a big yard and truck.
I wonder if, once push came to shove with the Article 32, Laurean told Maria that he wanted to flee with her, and that he already has his bus ticket to El Paso...and that they’d get to Mexico from there, together.
Definitely more motive for the wife with that scenario.
If that’s plausible, someone had to help her paint, plant the truck, the card, and his body. However, attorneys say they actually spoke to him just before he fled.
Now on the other hand, heard a report on the news this morning http://www.wbko.com/news/headlines/13867007.html from a woman Marine in Pennsylvania, face obscured, who said Maria was definitely afraid of him and that she herself was the person who procured the last, AND CURRENT MPO (part of which is substantiated here http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/01/17/missing.marine/and is in DIRECT CONTRACITION to NCIS statements of her fear, here http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/01/16/national/main3719415.shtml?source=mostpop_story)
Hmmm. Wonder how much it was, and from whom? His family or her family? If it was her family, it would add to the suspicion piling up that she knew a lot sooner than Jan. 10 about Maria’s death. Wonder if they’ve checked their bank records to see if there were any deposits/withdrawals that don’t make sense.
It would also be interesting to know WHEN the cash was transferred. How long had he been preparing to leave?
On the other hand, people can get into financial difficulties around Christmas, I have. It doesn’t sound like the Laurean’s traveled/got together with family members for the Holidays. Could have been a care package from her parents.
Is this something new?
"Christina Laurean, the wife of Cesar Armando Laurean, is not cooperating in the case to find her estranged husband in lieu of the murder of missing Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach."
It could be nothing more than a gift from family for Christmas. That’s why it would be interesting to see WHEN it came in. He also took out money from Maria’s account on the 24th (was it $400?). Then there’s the $700 that Maria had taken out on Dec. 14th. Wonder where that money is. A ticket from NC to El Paso, Tx I think cost something like $160 with a military discount. So she (or whoever bought that ticket) didn’t spend the whole $700 on that.
Yes, that interview was brought up earlier in the thread. She indicated she had been friends with him for four years. Maybe it was a mistake, but 4 years ago, he’d be in highschool. If she’s who she says she is, then there will be more explaining to do from the military side of things and the environment that Maria Lauterbach was subjected to.

A poster from websleuths states that "Someone on another site said that the items sold were listed in January."
“Christina Laurean, the wife of Cesar Armando Laurean, is not cooperating in the case to find her estranged husband in lieu of the murder of missing Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach.”
And yet the headline says she WAS cooperating.
doesn't jive
Thanks
