"Cloverfield" Has Begun...
CloverfieldNews ^

As you've probably heard by now, "Cloverfield" is a mysterious J.J. Abrams movie that revolves around a giant monster attack on New York as told via a home movie camera (a la "Blair Witch"). The movie, which opens January 18, started a world of hype after its untitled trailer premiered before "Transformers" last year.

Anyway, the countdown to "Cloverfield" has begun. There's a fake newscast involving the movie on-line now...it says that a Japanese oceanic exploration company's drilling station in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean has...DISAPPEARED. Something huge destroyed it.

The news casts can be views here.

Since the movie takes place in real time, this means something huge is heading towards New York, and should get there by, oh, say....the 18th!

Also, the fake MySpace page for Rob (the guy from the trailer) says that he's just gotten a job for Slusho! brand drinks. The job will require him to move to Japan for a while in about a month. I'll bet his friends will throw him a surprise going-away party on, say...the 18th!

I'm sorry, but this is too cool. It's a very novel concept, and I can't wait for this one.

If you haven't seen the trailers yet, you can view them on the movie's official website, www.cloverfieldmovie.com

tagruato.jp and slusho.jp are also two viral websites tied to the movie.

(I thought this might also be a good break for anyone getting burned out on the increasingly ridiculous presidential race).

Al Queda in a rubber monster suit?

Seriously, after seeing the trailers, if the movie can capture that tension for the duration, we may have the best big monster movie ever made.

From the makers of “LOST”, this movie looks good.

It seems to have some of the initial appeal that LOST did (and kind of still does) with the whole - what is it? what is happening? kind of thing going on....

Movie trailer looks good....I’m gonna go see it.

J.J. Abrams, and his scriptwriters, has done what I previously said was impossible.

They have recreated the tension and mystery of The Blair Witch Project and have done it in a studio setting.

This movie may be lame at the end of the day, but I will be seeing it on the 18th, so they did their job.

Exactly. I used to watch Godzilla movies on TNT all the time as a kid...but even then, I always had a problem with them. It was just lots of mindless destruction; no characters, no development, no involving story. The closest thing to “characters” were Japanese scientists watching everything on a monitor going “Oh no! Godzilla is attacking!”

I always wanted to see a monster movie that was told through the eyes of the people in the city, showed their struggle to survive the horror, and how it affected their lives. Hopefully, “Cloverfield” will be that movie I’ve always been waiting for.

I know, I love that. We don't see enough of it in Hollywood anymore.

I know, those pictures of Zachary Quinto as Spock were eerie. It was like a Leonard Nimoy clone.

Shatner is Kirk, and Kirk died in Generations. Now we have some dude from a Lindsay Lohan movie. No thanks, I wouldn’t watch it if you paid me, and I hope it bombs in the remembrance of DeForest Kelley and James Doohan.

Shatner is Kirk, and Kirk died in Generations.

Um...the movie is an origin story. It shows them in their youth, before they became the Enterprise crew.

Now we have some dude from a Lindsay Lohan movie.

I'll give Chris Pine a chance and forgive him for the Lohan movie. After all, no actor has a 100% record. He has the right look for a young Kirk to me. Most of the cast looks perfect, too.

No thanks, I wouldn’t watch it if you paid me

I just prefer to reserve judgement on these kinds of things until the movie actually comes out.

And what does any of this have to do with "Cloverfield," anyway? Abrams...who is only the producer, not the director of this project...making a Star Trek movie as his next project means you're going to boycott every single movie with his name on it for the rest of eternity? If it were Sean Penn, I could understand that kind of mentality, but...JJ Abrams?

I was just talking to some people about this movie... I’m really interested, cause I like Abrams’ style and I haven’t seen anything in theaters for a while. Does anyone watch Heroes, and did anyone else notice that Kristen Bell’s character was drinking a slusho thing in one of the recent episodes?

I wasn't watching, but I do know "Slusho" is a running gag throughout anything JJ Abrams is involved with. Jennifer Garner would often be offered some in "Alias." With Cloverfield, though, it may actually have something to do with the movie itself.

Here is a (really creepy) commercial for "Slusho"...apparently this commercial is chock-full of clues about "Cloverfield."

Actually, that one is really low-quality. Try this one instead.

Slusho had me immediately thinking of the fruity Oaty Bar ad in Serenity...Anyone else? Recall the bar scene when River gets “triggered”?

Yep. I’ve seen Serenity quite a few times, and the Slusho ad reminds me of the Fruity Oaty Bars thing a lot.

I saw the preview on apple’s website and it was downright eerie. It actually reminded me of the panic on 9/11, not necessarily a monster movie.
