BLAIRSVILLE, Georgia (CNN) -- The person of interest in the disappearance of a hiker in the north Georgia mountains is in custody and is being questioned by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, police announced Friday evening.

Gary Michael Hilton, 61, was detained after a police officer spotted his van at a convenience store.

Investigators also have another piece of the puzzle: Meredith Emerson's black Labrador retriever, Ella, who walked into a grocery store Friday. The animal was positively identified through an embedded microchip.

The search for Emerson will continue Saturday.

The truth is that females lack the upper body strength and when it is a hostile attack and male will win.

She should have taken an NRA Refuse to be a Victim course.

One is taught to carry OC Pepper Spray.

I don't know whether this unfortunate woman owned a gun or had a carry permit, but if so she was prohibited by law from being armed in state parks, like the one where she went missing.

I still have hope for a happy ending, but I can only wonder if this story might have been much different if this woman had been allowed by law to defend herself and had availed herself of that right. It's infuriating to know that if she was a victim of something terrible, her attacker knew that he would be attacking an unarmed victim.

Georgians, please check out GeorgiaCarry.org to see what is being done in your state to stand up for the right of people like this woman not to be defenseless victims.

I live and hike in the area where the young woman got lost. There are drop offs where someone could get seriously injured. The chances of her being alive are diminishing with each freezing night, especially with her dog not being with her to keep her warm.

When I get back home, if she hasn’t been located, I’ll try to get to the area with my dogs and see if they can catch a scent. (I have other obligations most of this month.)

This is such a sad sad occurance, but it does underscore the need for hikers to have a hiking partner . . . even though I hike solo 99.9% of the time . . . and to be very wary of strangers. (Knowing Karate or HapKiDo doesn’t mean much if you get hit on the head from behind or if you fall off a cliff.)

My heart goes out to her family and friends.

that was my point. His nephew was smarter than was given credit. You attack a cop and beat her down... she's on the radio with all of her friends who give you a trip to the ER after you fall down ...a lot.

Then he'd end up in lock up with a couple of inmates that owe the cops a favor and he'd be toast.

I'm pretty sure that the kid that worked as a bouncer could beat down the female cop. My point is that women are fooled into believing what they see on TV and the movies about women spinning around and putting arm bars or crotch shots to just whip up on men.

It just doesn't happen that way in a real fight. I think that women should be encouraged to defend themselves with their hands as a very, very last resort. My point was that everytime there is a female cop, soldier, olympic judo participant killed by a man with his bare hands everybody is "shocked". Most of the criminal predators rely on stealth, surprise and overwhelming action at the point of attack. There is no build up, squaring off and clever word play and banter.... I'd be surprised if this poor woman even knew what hit her.

If I ever fought somebody to the death I'd want to use a radio, hand grenade, machine gun, rifle, shot gun, pistol, knife feet, knees, elbows and as a last resort my hands.

I just think that women should be encouraged to be armed and vigilant whenever they are alone and not depend on a "blue" belt, whatever that means? A pistol and another armed companion, male or female are probably the safe way to go into the forest hiking on any forest trail. Society and nature are dispassionate about predators and prey. You are either a hunter or prey.

Per local news coverage:

Doesn't look good. Experienced hiker and dog lover would not have voluntarily left water bottle and leash on trail, left car at trail head. Her personal items would not be found 70 miles south of where she was hiking, thrown away near where her dog was found. And I don't like that the person of interest was in the process of cleaning (and perhaps vacuuming) his van when detained. Prayers for her and her friends and family.

Tonight's Atlanta news led with developments in the hiker's disappearance, an adolescent girl kidnapped by a MARTA bus driver taking the bus for repairs, capture of a serial rapist, and sentencing of a seventeen year old for vehicular manslaughter as a result of his hit-and-run accident involving an eight year old girl crossing the street in his neighborhood.

For those of you remember Simon & Garfunkel's "Silent Night/Six O'Clock News," the audio from this broadcast would have been a fitting counterpoint playing behind that angelic singing of Silent Night.

From the film, it looked as though there was an auto vacuum cleaner (or air machine) where he parked the van.

On the left side of the store there is an air hose AND a water hose. Had to use it once when car overheated. Drawing a blank on the vacuum, but only because I have not used one there.

"Technique beats physical strength any day. Ask any affectionate of Judo, Karate or Kungfu."

I assume you mean aficionado. I will politely disagree with you. I know many folks who have trained for years in Judo, Karate or other martial arts who wouldn't last 5 seconds with in a street fight.

Ted Bundy often blind-sided young women with a tire iron before they knew they were in any danger. They often trusted him because he was handsome and not “creepy” at first glance.

7 O'Clock News/Silent Night

Thanks. I sat here lazily and tried to remember whether it was 6 o'clock or 9 o'clock news. Didn't Google. Turns out I would have been wrong either way.

Prayers for this young lady.

"The dog belonged to the woman...she was hiking with the dog."

He had his own dog also. There are reports they were letting the dogs play together.
