BLAIRSVILLE, Georgia (CNN) -- The person of interest in the disappearance of a hiker in the north Georgia mountains is in custody and is being questioned by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, police announced Friday evening.
Gary Michael Hilton, 61, was detained after a police officer spotted his van at a convenience store.
Investigators also have another piece of the puzzle: Meredith Emerson's black Labrador retriever, Ella, who walked into a grocery store Friday. The animal was positively identified through an embedded microchip.
The search for Emerson will continue Saturday.

I fear the worst for that young woman (too bad the dog can’t talk) but never abandon hope! Here’s praying that she is found alive.
Doesn’t sound good for this girl ... I don’t care ho “fit” she was said to be ... girls just don’t have the strength of men - even if they old and BIGGER than they are.
This one is most probably a heartbreaker.
I’ve been following this story. Dang!
I’m praying she is found safe.
One of my nephews (6 3, 225 lbs.) thought as much when he tangled with a petite, 5 4 female police officer
He got his butt handed to him. ;-)
The truth is that females lack the upper body strength and when it is a hostile attack and male will win.
she is a martial arts expert...hopefully she was able to defend herself.
I am a dog lover, and I am happy that the dog was found. Tragic story for the girl, I fear.
Prayers she will be found alive.
Nephew makes his living as a bouncer, so he is no slouch when it comes to physical confrontation. Will admit to this day (with much embarrassment), he was whipped.
It’s a bad sign that the dog left her. I’m afraid this will have a sad ending.
That dog showing up alone an hour away from the car is not good.
Well a bouncer isn’t known for being very smart ... maybe that was her edge?
Seriously, don’t fool yourself. If a semi intelligent guy attacked this woman you describe, she’d lose - perhaps her life. Female physiques and male physiques are not equal and interchangeable. I know, you’re supposed to believe that genders are interchangeable - LOL! No, not when it comes to strength.
Technique beats physical strength any day. Ask any affectionate of Judo, Karate or Kungfu.
My nephew is not the smartest person in the world (life spent as a bouncer), however, he is no slouch when it comes to protecting himself.
According to his story he attempted to grab the officer, she hit him in the head with her baton (night stick), while he was stunned, she swept him off his feet with a sweep of her feet. While he was down, she hit him again with her baton again and was able to handcuff him.
I keep trying to imagine how he could have done it. Sure seems like this 61 year old toothless man would have to have a weapon. A martial arts expert would be able to get anything away from him if he got close enough.
Does this guy have any criminal history?
