The Hobbit Hole XXXV - ...is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

Posted on 01/03/2008 6:35:58 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I watered the transplants to the planter boxes...the others were mud into mud so I'm not going to worry about them right now.

There's more racin' at 'dega this afternoon and the Cubbies are playing so my afternoon is spoken for.

Dang bunnies are everywhere....

The transplants I set out yesterday look happy....something (a bunny?) tried to dig under one of my fences...

So when is the Global Warming supposed to start?

heh, well, doesn’t sound like it’ll happen next week. The next one perhaps? Seems like we’re still playing hide and seek with the sun.

*snort*

We had a bunny appear when we were finishing up in the yard late yesterday evening. We'd finished the digging, and were covering everything with tarps, and he ambled up out of the woods. They like our yard cause we gots lots of weeds. ;o)

You missed it. It was back in 1998, and it's been steadily cooling since then. ;o)

I’m actually going to be out most of the afternoon today, too...brother invited me over for a late lunch and to hang out. I’ll be back by five or six, but...I guess we could probably just watch it individually this time around.

Ah - OK - If we haven’t watched it yet when you get back, maybe we can tonight, otherwise, I’ll consider ourselves ‘on our own”!

So what were you up to last night? Were you out late? :~)

This horse, now named Frodo Baggins, fell and had to be euthanized at the Rolex Three Day Event in Kentucky yesterday:

Saturday, April 26, 2008

Press Statement #2

Frodo Baggins and Laine Ashker fell at fence 5. Ashker sustained injuries but was conscious, talking and able to move all extremities when she was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital. She is currently under the care of the emergency and trauma services staff.

Frodo Baggins was immediately attended by a team of veterinarians. He was given intravenous fluids and supportive medications for shock and pain. After he was stabilized, he was sedated and transported by horse ambulance to nearby Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, where he was immediately attended by emergency personnel.

Further tests showed that Frodo Baggins had sustained a fracture at the base of his skull, as well as severe lung injury. As the prognosis was very poor, a representative of the family concurred that euthanasia was the most humane option for the horse. A complete necropsy examination will be performed. Everyone at the event is saddened by the loss of this brave horse.

From this article: Rider injured at Rolex 3-Day Event | courier-journal | The Courier-Journal

...“I saw the horse coming in,” Roska said, “and it looked like he went up to jump and hit just about (at) his chest – his front legs barely cleared it – and he just flipped over, through the jump, and landed on top of the rider.

“They got the horse up and he was standing fine. The rider was already surrounded so I couldn’t see her -- but then the horse, about a minute later -- it looked like he got spooked by something and turned around and fell over.”

Frodo Baggins, a 12-year-old thoroughbred that Ashker bought six years ago, was bred in New Zealand and named for the character in “Lord of the Rings.”

According to a February article by Charlie Leffler in Ashker’s hometown paper, The Goochland Gazette, the horse actually appeared in the movie “Lord of the Rings.”
Ashker didn’t know that until she had the horse home in Virginia, the paper said.

Ashker told the paper: “His real owner told me, ‘Oh by the way, this horse has been in Lord of the Rings’.”

The owner sent Ashker photographs to prove his claim, the paper said.

“The horses had to train for eight months in New Zealand, and they chose about 20 black horses to film the movie,” Ashker told the Gazette. “Frodo was one of them.”

Frodo played in one of the film’s most memorable scenes, the paper said. Early in the movie when the hero hobbits are hiding along a roadside, Frodo and his “dark rider” come to a halt above them.

After filming, the story continued, Frodo was one of six horses chosen to appear at the movie premiere. “He met the prime minister of New Zealand,” Ashker said in the article. “He walked down the red carpet with Elijah Wood and did parades, and it was amazing.”

Rest in Peace, Frodo.

I have a SOCOM and a SOCOM II and that rail on the SOCOM II is a friggin cheese grater. Sharp and painful for the user and anyone unlucky enough to get hit with it.

I've had some skin shredded by unprotected rails, too. That's why they all get some protection before I handle them.

Other than that, how do you like the SOCOM II?

Also relieved to hear I’m not the only one that has scratched their head and muttered whiskey tango foxtrot when trying a supposedly simple part replacement.

I had replaced forends on two other Mossbergs with those rubberized Pachmayer ones. My buddies think I have some sort of mechanical talent. Not one single problem. My own shotgun, it decides to be stubborn.

Identical to SOCOM cept for the rails sharp edges and forward weight. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much weight forward for me. Even a standard M1A is lighter IMO. I am NOT a fan of the accessory rails at all. The only accessory on any of my EBR’s AR’s M4 Clones etc aside from optics up top is a Surefire forward vertical grip light.

I have a 6X fixed sight on the standard SOCOM and it is a snap shooting tool for sure. I like it !

Hope yer well Sir !!

Stay safe !

Well, you can say that again. :-)

Of course, it could have been your buddy’s shotgun that proved so recalciterant and yours that was the snap.

How was the race?

Saw the tv guide listing for next week. Seems you’ve got one on Saturday nite.

It was okay....no Big One but Junior got in a Big Enough One. Still, he managed a 10th place finish.

Yeah, night racing next weekend. That means I won’t have a conflict with the Cubs/Cards game. :)

You tactical dudes....

My range time this week consisted of shooting some skeet with a 1914 FN A-5 straight stock 16 ga. and a 1938 Winchester M12 also 16 ga. And punching paper with a 1924 Colt 1908 Pocket Hammerless (feeds .380 HP’s fine!) and a 1963 Colt LW Commander in .38 Super.

I considered taking my Colt Army Special in .32-20... but moderation in all things.
