The Hobbit Hole XXXV - ...is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

Posted on 01/03/2008 6:35:58 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I just looked up a Google image of a rose breasted grosbeak, and it looks like a bird I saw this evening when SirKit and I were walking. It was about the size of the house wrens we have around, and it had a beautiful red head and throat that was more blue red than a robin’s breast which is more orange-red

That's great news! But, does he look like a Baaad dude with the patch?

Not so much. It has a puppy on it.

But he's very self conscious about it. Doesn't want anyone but our immediate family to see him wearing it.

Aren’t they beautiful birds? I was so excited to see it; we just mostly have the more common birds around here. The state bird of Missouri is the bluebird, and I’ve never seen one. The bluejays have started coming back after they were so decimated by the West Nile Virus, so that’s good.

Thanks anyways, but those look like peanut M&Ms... I prefer the plain chocolate. ;-)

I've been lusting after these, but I'm still trying to get my blood sugar under control, so I've managed to refrain, so far.

I think that's the first time I'd ever seen one. We have a big woodsy area at the back of our lot, and we've seen all kinds of birds back there. Our kitchen table sits in a bump out at the back of the house, and just from there, it's fun to see the different birds. I usually see a LOT of cardinals in the winter; they stand out against the snow. I didn't see many this year, but because we've had the kitchen in disarray, we haven't sat at the table much, so I hadn't been looking out there.

There's a swampy area about a mile away, and I see red-winged blackbirds there from time to time, and a goose family lives there, too. I've seen Mama and Papa grazing in the grass on the swamp side of the road, this Spring, and sometimes they'll cross over to the other side, which is also woodsy. In the past, I've seen them with their goslings pecking in the grass on the swamp side.
