How the heck do these macaques find any time to eat anything? They've got to keep up their strength somehow.

I think the researchers might be projecting here. They do not know what the monkeys are thinking - they could have just as well concluded that the males wanted to groom the females and the females demanded sex after as a means of currency. Or that grooming is a form of foreplay that builds the intimacy and trust culminated in sex or that even monkeys don’t want a skanky mate.
