Word For The Day, Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - syllabub
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 01/02/2008 | The Janitor

Posted on 01/02/2008 6:47:14 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

syllabub • \SILL-uh-bub\ • noun
milk or cream that is curdled with an acid beverage (as wine or cider) and often sweetened and served as a drink or topping or thickened with gelatin and served as a dessert

Example sentence:

On special occasions, grandma would serve syllabub for dessert.

Did you know?
Syllabub's a concoction whose name has had almost as many variations as there are versions of how to make it: "solybubbe," "sullabub," "sullibib," "sellibub," "sallibube," "sillie bube," "sillybob" -- even "sillibucke" and "silly-bauk" in some dialects. There are theories about the word's origins, but no one knows for sure where the name came from. (There's no connection to "silly," as far as we know, though imbibing it might make one act that way.) We do know that both the name "syllabub" and the concoction itself go back to at least the 16th century. Today, we're more likely to encounter "syllabub" in a historical novel than on the menu at a local drinking spot, at least in the United States, but those fortunate enough to taste the drink/dessert often give it rave reviews.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I can assure you - going out is more boring than having your children home with you. Enjoy them while you have them close to you.

“On her first day as a new teacher, Mary got all of her students drunk. She was so nervous that she thought she heard the principal tell her, “Be sure that each student receives a syllabub before you begin teaching—and I don’t mean a little, partial one.”

If you could smell it you would try it. It has a wonderful fragrance of lemon and vanilla. It’s served warm with warm custard sauce. The spots are golden raisins. Think a warm slice of raisin bread soaked in warm vanilla custard.

I made this yesterday:

If you freepmail me a real email, I'll send the recipe. It's not like haggis or anything with animal parts. Flour, sugar, lemon, shortening, raisins, eggs, cream and vanilla.

Marsey, 53, of Hartlepool, Cleveland, said: “I’m lucky my knickers are like a parachute! If they were skimpy they’d have been no use.”

It has a faint suggestion of Dr. Seuss to it.

And yet . . .

I work at a college library, where we have books for the syllabus. Is that close enough?

Do you realize this is the first time I used bold print in a post, rather than italic?

The only bad thing about attending the game is missing all the other bowl games, so I don’t know how the other games went. We did watch the Hawaii/Georgia game last night and thought Georgia was incredible!
