I just purchased a new GE Profile French Door refrigerator that uses LEDs to illuminate the inside. It looked great in the store. I hope I like it as much when it is delivered.
Very sore eye after blasting myself with an l2d (Multi-page thread 1 2)

Sigh. Mine was lost in '77. Still using a solar-powered calculator bought in '85 though.
I know a lot about that place, I was there years ago when we were all fledgling dedicated tinkerers with the newest stuff like the Luxeon emitter, I myself am the owner/designer behind a company called Alaska Illuminations, I sold some modified Brinkman LED converted flashlights on the web and locally here in Alaska. Needless to say I found wintertime in Alaska a fertile ground for light tools during our long dark winter months. For awhile it was anybodies game on design, efficiency and the “cool” factor but I was dismayed at the encroaching aspects of people from overseas trolling for ideas and designs especially from China so even though I lurk every day there I rarely post anymore.
I have never quit my LED work though and I get people on a daily basis scratching their heads while their jaw drops especially at the dealership when I occasionally take my 2002 Silverado dually in for work that all my lights on it are LED, and not just cheap 5mm types but mostly SMD, Cree and even some leftover Luxeons I bought by the hundreds years ago. Technology wise the lighting is possibly 10 years ahead of what you may see on a new truck, like maybe a 2012 model could have, I’m talking about LEDs that are brighter than the original bulbs, have better color and used creatively like the strip lights under my tailgate that are progressive turn signals, they are as bright as those LED advertising signs you see, actually it used to be part of several that I used. Or like the video camera in the front grill that transmit to a program and gives an image on the tailgate, or the brake lights that have red lasers with lenses to focus out the beams at eye level of the vehicle behind me at a certain close in range.I do not share my ideas nor do I make anything for sale, I only do it for myself, I know thats selfish but its better than having the Chinese make it dirt cheap and selling it to everybody here in the US, I enjoy the uniqueness of having something that looks like a Hollywood special effects vehicle, and I mean it really draws attention.
Please Freep Mail me if you'd like on/off
I wounded a deer mid afternoon. We were tracking the blood trail as it was running a little, then stopping. It got dark while we were on the trail. I tried using a LED flashlight to track the wounded deer. The LED light would not show up the blood trail compared to the conventional flashlight that would show the blood trail clearly so we could continue tracking.
The LED light is great. But I don’t like the color band and I believe the LED light changes the light spectrum unnaturally. At least for my eyes, LED lighting is unsettling and not for every instance.
When I am out with the dogs at night, they illuminate a lot but do seem to wash out colors. I don't have to track animal blood but I can see where it would not work.
Thanks at least for pinging me. BMFLR.
There are now white LEDs that give you a better selection of color. The first generation was heavily tilted towards a blue over all light. Now they have much 'warmer' colors available. I think they would show blood trails better, as they have more red and orange in their spectrum.
Now that must have been a spendy item back in ‘73.
$395.00, IIRC.
Or, in other terms, everything I earned that entire summer.
I’m kind of a geek myself, but geezus, there are some real geeks there! I need to see a LED flashlight in action before I get too worked up. Can you recommend a fairly inexpensive one that will show me what the fuss is about? Thinking of a cheaper workhorse that isn’t top of line, but good representative. Like most things, I doubt there is that much diff between this one and the top of line one (for common use anyway).
I didn’t think any of those steam-powered models were still around!
I go for a light with plenty of flood, and generally a dimmer light that has a long runtime. That's why the early CMG Infinities were ideal for me. I have a Maglite LED and it's ok but overpriced for what it is.
I guess one I would recommend for cheap is the newer (not as good as the older CMG's) Gerber Infinity Ultra. Around $15 for a nice bright light and about 100 hour runtime on 1 AA NIMH rechargeable battery.

Some are. I’m using mine.
It’s getting a little old, sometimes it needs to be kick started to get the top row of LEDs to light...
LEDs, OLEDs mentioned. :’)
