Highway, the stray dog rescued from a grassy island between highways near downtown Fort Worth, is on the road to recovery.
Tammy Hawley, operations manager for the Humane Society of North Texas, said the dog, who was befriended by passing motorists and captured in late November, is starting to warm up to being touched but is not quite ready to be adopted. "She is starting to lean in and let us pet her, instead of freezing," Hawley said. "But we want to assess her and make a good match so that once she goes home, she will stay home."
Highway lived on a patch of ground amid the busy interchange of Interstate 35W, U.S. 287 and Spur 280 for at least a year, sleeping beneath an overpass. Several commuters fed the stray -- a red shepherd mix -- and worried about her safety.
The Humane Society received many calls after a Star-Telegram report last month about Highway. Five families have applied to adopt her.
While Highway is healthy -- she doesn't have anything, not even a flea -- Hawley said the dog has some behavioral "tics" like backing away from being touched. The Humane Society wants to continue monitoring her behavior.
"We want to make sure we're not setting someone up for failure..." Hawley said. "We want to do what is best for her."
There is no creature more loving and loyal than a dog. I think it was will Rogers who said that he didn’t really care where he went when he died, just as long as he went to where the dogs were.
Pretty dog. Hope they get her issues straightened out and she finds a real home.
I’m familiar with the quote, which is usually attributed to “Anonymous.” Always thought Rogers was more of a people person. :)
"I've seen a look in dogs eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts." -John Steinbeck
awww
I also once knew a black lab (abused) that it took a year for him to trust me enough to pet him. I was so thrilled when it happened that I phoned my then husband and told him about it.
Prayers for this dog. Its a cutie!
I have a Shepherd mix I rescued from a shelter, though I don't think she was a abused, just sickly and very submissive. She's come a long way in 15+ years! These Shep mixes usually make great pets and I'm sure she will find a great home when she's adoptable. Not sure about the name though.
