Two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Bill Parcells is returning to the NFL, but this time he won't be roaming the sidelines. Parcells signed a four-year contract on Thursday to become the Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Miami Dolphins.
Parcells, who will work for ESPN through Monday, Dec. 24, is expected to hold a news conference Dec. 27 at the Dolphins' facility.
Parcells will oversee the club's football operations and report directly to owner Wayne Huizenga. The move becomes official one day after Parcells turned down essentially the same role with the Atlanta Falcons.
"Bill's accomplishments put him among the most successful head coaches in NFL history, and this position was created to take advantage of his unique background and expertise," Huizenga said in a statement. "We all know the respect that he has around the NFL. He has a proven track record of success everywhere he has been in the National Football League, and his football acumen will help put the Miami Dolphins franchise back among the elite of the NFL."
On Wednesday, the expectation around the league was that Parcells would take over in Atlanta, with even some reports saying the deal was done. By the afternoon, however, the deal fell apart and the Dolphins moved quickly to get Parcells to sign a contract.
"I'm honored to join such an illustrious franchise as the Miami Dolphins and to work for one of the best owners in the league in Wayne Huizenga," Parcells said. "He shares my same commitment to winning and I told him I would do everything I can to help turn around the team's fortunes.
"I respect what the Dolphins name means –- the legacy of the Perfect Season, and people like Coach Shula, Dan Marino and so many others who have made the team one of the most successful franchises in the NFL. I'm looking forward to helping restore that winning tradition."
The team made the announcement shortly after the locker room was closed for the day, and roughly 45 minutes after Dolphins coach Cam Cameron sidestepped at least a half-dozen questions about Parcells -- even refusing to say if he's ever met the coach.
"There will potentially be a time to have that discussion," said Cameron, who along with GM Randy Mueller will report to Parcells. "Today, I don't see it as being that day or this time."
Parcells resigned in January after four years as the Dallas head coach. During a 19-year career that also included coaching the New York Giants, New England Patriots and New York Jets, Parcells made it to three Super Bowls, winning twice with the Giants.
Known best for a gruff demeanor and colorful quotes, Parcells left coaching with the ninth-most wins in NFL history and a career record of 183-138-1. He was 34-32 in Dallas, including 0-2 in the postseason.

How it warrants language like ‘he’s a scumbag’ let alone comparing him to Bill Clinton is simply beyond reason.
I’ve never had Parcells coaching one of the teams I follow, so maybe thats why I don’t have anywhere near the ‘personal investment’ you seem to have.
but I gotta tell you, reading your comments about him, it seems he either stole your lunchmoney repeatedly as a child, or your wife as an adult, its that far ‘out there’.
Anyway, we disagree. I think he’ll improve the Dolphin’s dramatically, as he usually does when arriving on any team or franchise’s doorstep.
My hatred of Parcells isn’t about the game, it’s about how he treats people. Just look at this week, he wasn’t getting the deal out of Huizenga that he wanted so he starts negotiating with Arthur Blank, “reaches terms” with Blank, tells Adam Schefter so it hits the press, which forces Huizenga to cave on the final parts of the contracts, so he turns what he leaked to Shefter into a lie and bails on Blank. And this is SOP for Parcells. Remember all the years he teased teams negotiating for a comeback until the the HOF voters didn’t vote him in, he spent years manipulating the process trying to get voted into the Hall and resume coaching in the same year. And remember when he bailed on the Pats at first his title was “adviser” because he was still under a coaching contract so Belichick was going to officially be the coach while Parcells was officially something else.
The guy has a long history of using people and loopholing contracts. What his job title is doesn’t matter. Somebody that does things like that deserves to be hated no matter what their profession, football coach, used car salesman, President of the United States, doesn’t matter, it’s sleazy behavior performed by sleazy people. Parcells is a sleazy person.
I’m a Steelers fan, not a Pats fan, I’m a modern day Pats respecter because the first dynasty of the cap era deserves respect, but I rooted against the Pats that Superbowl partly because of Parcells constant carping that season. I’ve never been even a part time fan of any team Parcells has been involved in while he was there, so sorry but there is no personal investment. But he is symptomatic of one of the major problems in sports today, he’s a guy who’s clearly driven exclusively by money and ego, he doesn’t care about his team, he doesn’t care about the sport, and he doesn’t care who he has to step on to get what he wants.
Sorry none of my comments are out there, Parcells is demonstrable scum, he should be hated by all right thinking people. I hate ALL liars, and given that Parcells’ lies actually go onto to contracts he intends to violate he is one of the all time liars walking the planet today. Sorry you can’t see that, but that’s a problem with YOUR vision, not mine.

What’s wrong with hating bad people? Why does the fact that they’re an NFL coach make them immune to the most basic method society has of enforcing rules? Parcells is a bad person, bad people SHOULD be hated, his job doesn’t have anything to do with that, the only impact his job has it that it makes his despicable activities public.

It is kind of strange, after Blank got screwed by Vick in the off season, then screwed by Petrino in the season, apparently Parcells thought it was important who the biggest screw job guy in the NFL is.
Do you even bother to read past the first sentence? Why shouldn’t I hate a bad person? Why does their job matter? I’m friends with a lady whose ex-husband beat her, clearly the guy is scum, should I not bother to hate him because he makes paper?
Back in the day despising people was how society enforced it’s rules. You didn’t worry about their job, scumbags were ridiculed and run out of town because the town was a better place without them than with them. I despise bad people, ALL bad people, football coaches, paper makers, Presidents, don’t care, bad people are bad people. The one making a fool out of themselves here is the one proposing that football coaches should be immune to basic civil values because they’re football coaches.
