Christmas presents for a four year old girl and eight year old boy?

My wife works with a single mom. The single mom is an OR scrub tech with two children, a four year old girl and an eight year old boy.

She also has no money and hasn't been able to buy any gifts for her kids for xmas.

This is a last item at the bottom of my priorities because I just found out about it tonight, but what could I get the children that wouldn't break the bank? What are kids those ages these days interested in?

thanx.

It'd be really cool if I could find somebody to dress up like Santa and take the stuff over on xmas eve.

For the boy, a Transformer. A good one, like $20 to $25. (Bumblebee or Optimus is cool.)

Or two small ones, about $10 each.

My son LOVES those things.

the gift that keeps on giving: when my kids were little, we got them a subscription to either Highlights or there used to be one called Ranger Rick or something...about animals. They got the magazine on Christmas day...then every month after that.

If the 4-yr-old girl likes Disney Princesses...you're set...there's no end of stuff. (STICKERS! sticker books were always a hit at 4, 5, 6, 7...etc.)

When our son was 8, Legos were all he cared about. As for the 4 year old....I’m for the classic doll baby. And a book for each. Books are cheap.

Books, crayons & coloring books. Dress up sets for the little girl & trucks, matchbox cars for the boy. If they are broke stay away from toys with batteries. I once knew a family who got toys that needed batteries & none came with the gifts so the children were really sad. When we do a toys for tots run we tape batteries on each toy that needs them. Make sure you check & see where the toys are made. Watch out for toys from China. Little girls like bubbles & bath stuff too.

I have an 8 year old boy. He and his buddies love Star Wars. Maybe a DVD if they have a player - or a toy light saber? Sports stuff is always cool - maybe just a soccer ball or basketball? Mine also likes outdoor type stuff - like little battery powered lanterns or flashlights or a small tent or sleeping bag - the sleeping bag is also a good thing to have in case one gets invited to sleep-overs. Those plug and play video games are pretty reasonable - they look like a joystick and include several games - like Pac Man, Centipede, etc...

Sure, some Duplo blocks for the 4 year old, and some Lego blocks for the boy. They have all sorts of sets you can buy. If you don’t know which sets would be liked, there are just little tubs of Duplo/Lego bricks that have no real ‘set’ instructions, they can build whatever they want to. Lots of places sell them and the tubs are the best bargains - most bricks for the least cost.

4 Duplos
8 Legos/Lincoln Logs

Toys that provid a bottomless creative outlet. - or donate to their college fund.

Good luck.

Books of course. And the good stand by art supplies (crayons, paper, paints, markers etc)
My 4 year old granddaughter loves anything Hello Kitty and manicures (that I should have never started).
My 8 year old nephew loves anything sports related but mostly soccer.

10 yrs ago we would have at least two posts recommending a snub-nose .38 for the 4 yr old and a Mal-Deuce for the 8 yr old, under adult supervision of course....

How about a Hot glue gun for the 8 yr old and two down pillows for the 4 year old and encourage creative decorating of their bedroom while Mom takes a bath. );^)

The http://www.toysrus.com site has “Shop By Age” links on the left that may give you some ideas for gifts.

Once you pick an age group, then you can narrow it down further by boy or girl.

Every boy should have Legos, Transformers, and a toy lightsaber. Spiderman is also pretty popular right now, as is pirate gear and toy ninja swords, and what boy doesn’t like those?

As far as the girl goes, she’d probably enjoy a stuffed animal that came with a couple outfits, or one of those ‘mama and babies’ stuffed animal sets. Picture books (Goodnight Moon and Corduroy were my favorites at that age) would also go over pretty well. Duplos might also be good at that age, but that depends on the kind of kid she is.

# 8 has some good suggestions. Anything flashy, Star Warsy, video game-ish. Tents a good idea. Fun to play in and sleep in....and they fold up.

If some of you folks were ages 4 or 8, I bet you'd just LOVE to wake up on Christmas morning and eagerly unwrap a piece of paper saying someone donated to some fund which is all gobbledygook to you at your age. What a letdown that would be.

Forget fretting about being correct.....be brash, rash and a giver of something fun!

Lou, you are a kind-hearted person. You're generosity will come back to you in multiple ways. Merry Christmas!

Leni

I work at Family Christian Bookstore. Veggie Tales are very popular right now. Also, Strawberry Shortcake, Buzby, Bibleman and Angel Wars. They are appropriate for these children’s ages.
