Dear FRiends
It really pains me to see some of those vicious anti-Mormons attacks we see on Free Republic disguised under the freedom of speech. Attacking people based on their Mormon faith is really disgusting and it is an insult to this great forum. People who do not like Governor Mitt Romney based on his positions are free to express their opinion as such, but people who attack him because he is a Mormom should be ashamed of themselves and must not be allowed to do so.
I greatly hope that Free Republic members and moderators will get together and help in stopping this anti-Mormon vitriol, this great Free Republic must not be tainted by these shameless acts.
I was under the impression one's religion was a matter of choice, not that "they were born that way." Sounds like the homosexual doctrine.
Applause!! Excellent post!! Ever Onward!!
:-)
People have called my church a "cult" and quite frankly I am not offended. I think it is funny. The fact is that to your typical Mainline Presbyterian, I'm sure they would think that our church has all the earmarks of a cult.
The Mormon Church has generally been referred to as a "cult" by nearly all Mainline Christian Denominations since 1830. The problem that we have today (and it permeates our politically correct society) is that people are now able to squelch free speech by simply feigning "offense" at someone's characterization of their belief system or lifestyle or sex orientation or whatever the offense de jeur is at the time.
I find it quite disconcerting that the Mormons on this forum are so "offended" everytime someone suggests that they don't believe that Mormons are "Christians." So rather than air the issue out and bring out the definitions and argue the ideas, the LDS Posters simply cry "Anti-Mormon Bigot" and free speech gets squelched in the name of political correctness.
Personally I don't usually refer to Mormonism as a "cult". That is probably a word which these days causes some people to just freak out. Nevertheless, I grew up in a Mormon Church and most of my relatives are Mormons. They are, by and large, nice people. But that does not undo the fact that IMHO they are all mixed up in a rather secretive and authoritarian religious "cult".
If you read the posts here carefully, I think you will find that most of the "hate" expressed by freepers here is directed at those (like me) who are simply trying to air out some of the rather bizzarre and unique doctrines, rituals and practices of the Mormon Church which set it apart from Mainstream Christianity.
So if guys like me get banned for asking pointed questions and making legitimate points about the beliefs and practices of the person who very well may be the next president of the United States, then how is free speech and liberty and truth benefited?
J, your moniker on this forum is Latin for Truth. You don't advance the cause of truth by squelching dissent and by allowing groups of people to stifle free speech on the altar of political correctness.
I have been called an Anti-Mormon Bigot and an Anti-Mormon Jihadist on this forum more times than I can count. I laugh it off.
So check the posts and see who's giving the venom and who is receiving it. I know that I have received much more than I gave. Maybe I deserved it. Who knows. I do know I've ruffled a few feathers, so I suspect that people are going to take their venom out on me. Cest la Vie. People sometimes ruffle my feathers. So what. I'm not trying to stifle the Mormon's opinions of me or my church. But I don't think I can say the same for many of them nor many of their defenders here.
These issues need to be aired out. If we go into this election with our heads buried in the sand because we fear that we might offend someone, then we are going to be disappointed when Hillary and company take advantage of that fact and Hillary ends up being cast as the REAL Evangelical Christian in this upcoming election.
I'm probably going to vote for Romney in the general election, because he is probably going to win the nomination. But I'm not going to be ignorant of what his beliefs and practices are when I go into that voting booth. I took GWB's "born again" Christianity into consideration when I voted for him in the primaries and the general. I have every right to take Romney's Mormonism into account in voting against him in the primaries and reluctantly voting for him in the general. Frankly, having grown up in the Mormon Church, I would prefer a "Jack Mormon" to a "Good Mormon" as my president. Unfortunately Jack Mormon isn't running.
If the anti-Mormon posters would even identify their own faith, it would be a step in the right direction. It’s disconcerting that they can’t even be honest about that.

I have a real problem voting for someone that does not believe in the Trinity.
Thats too bad. The more I listen to INTOLERANT, ignorant, uninformed, uneducated Evangelicals, the more I thank God I was born a Catholic.

record. He is pure snake oil. He makes me sick.

Youre a moron. Get a life.
From gop lady: "A lot of these words are meant to hurt and smear. No one really wants to censor free speech, but as you know, responsibility goes hand-in-hand with it."
That was a good post.
This thread has moved rapidly. I had a feeling that it would be huge, last night.
LOL!
You and your friends in the peanut gallery are high comedy.
As soon as I mention anti-Mormon in a post, one of you responds, even though you weren’t posted to.
*Chuckle*
How many times and how many people are you going to ask this question of? If you don’t realize this type of junk posting when you see it, then neither I nor anyone else can help you.
Am I on your approved list of people who may reply to your replies on this open forum?
oops, my mistake.
There are many Biblical doctrines that Christians disagree on. We are fine with that. But there is a small set of core doctrines that are inviolate. Any "church" that denies those core beliefs and claims to be Christian is a cult. We are warned by the writings of the apostles to call such people out. Paul praised the Church in Berea for scrutinizing every word that came out of his mouth. They diligently searched the Scriptures to see if Paul was telling the truth. On the other hand, he criticized the Church at Corinth and the one in Galatia for tolerating men who taught heresy.
As a believer in Jesus Christ, I am much more concerned about a "church" that claims to be Christian yet denies (or usurps) the basic tenets of the faith than I am about a Hindu congregation or a Buddhist temple opening its doors in the neighborhood. They are up-front about being non-Christian and they are not going to deceive someone into believing they are following Jesus when they are following a made-up Christ. Jesus told us people would claim that the Christ was here or there and would lead the people to destruction.
Now ... the 2008 election. If we put someone from one of these cults in the White House, many will believe the man's religion is legitimate and will be led astray. Jesus said whoever misleads his people like that would be better to have a millstone (a VERY BIG stone .. I've seen millstones) tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea.
I prefer to be truthful rather than nice myself.[FC]
"Nice." (Where's that word found in the Bible again?) I think the closest you can come is "kindness." If we look at Jesus, He was kindest to repentant tax-payers and prostitutes, & he was harshest on legalistic religious folks who sought to pull themselves up spiritually by their own bootstraps...which happens to be the exact word (bootstraps) used by an LDS "prophet" back in the 80s (Kimball).
If we look at Jesus, He called the legalists "brood of vipers" (Matt 3) and "whitewashed sepulchres" (tombstones)--filthy & dead on the inside & basically "nice" & "white & delightsome" on the outside...He also overturned money tables, etc...
So the question I have: Why are folks trying to be nicer than Jesus?
“I’m willing to bet that those who will feign they’ve never seen the rude, disrespectful, obnoxious and many times out-right lies towards the Mormon faith posted on FR have never had the guts to say in the face of a Mormon the sewage they post on FR. It doesn’t take courage to hide behind a keyboard when ridiculing and debasing another’s faith.”
First let me clear this up for you: I have never claimed that I am not on occasion rude, disrespectful or obnoxious.
Second: what I say or ask about LDS comes directly from my bishop uncle. If I state something that is not true, then he is lying to me.
Third: yes I have said what I say to the face of an LDS.
Fourth: have a good evening.
Did you even click on the links I posted at #477?

When the Romney supporters label anyone who doesn't like Romney an anti-Mormon bigot, I have no problems with them actually being on the receiving end of it in response. I'll join your call for curtailing anti-Mormon sentiment from anti-Romney folks if you'll likewise endorse a call to refrain from any and all claims of religious bigotry by Romney folks.

It is fair to question, if it is done respectfully, turthfully, and fairly. May I suggest you lead the way on ceasing these anti-Mormon posts
Just HOW many of my posts have you even read? For the most part I post FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE doctrines and practices that are conveniently omitted from posts by the apologists. When I am called names here, and attacked for example by a mormon because My testimony of Jesus Christ did not fit HIS template that the Book of Mormon is true, I don't lie down and whine. HE insists to this day that I "failed to seek correctly."
As nearly as I can tell, you have NOT read the thousands of posts on the threads you are describing, or in fairness you would be adding at least ONE mormon in your "To" line in your post. Why didn't you?
I would be very happy to discuss this issue with you after you have given a fair hearing on the subject by going back and reading some threads, from beginning to end, with an open mind, and SETTING ASIDE any prejudice you may have because you are a feverent Romney supporter.
Please FReepmail me when you have done this.
Frankly IMO, neither Jveritas OR you have bothered to subjectly read these threads. I question whether you have allowed fellow FReepers with which have a common goal to influence you. If you both are SO worried about the image of FR, how can you overlook this from a mormon?
I concur with your post and appreciate your thoughts. You are right, some very sick puppies are being exposed here. This is the same spirit that we see on the other side of the world, the Jihadists. We too have fundamentailst who think they must do Gods work by destroying the enemy. Ours too attack from the shadows and wont identify themselves. That is, they know they are doing dirty work, so they wont say what church or religion they represent. However, by the details of their posts, we know they are fundamentalist Evangelicals. They are like the "sons of thunder" who wanted to bring down fire onto a city, to whom Jesus said, "Ye know not what spirit ye are of."
Well said.
Have you ever read, Mitt Romney, the Mormon (Whats That?!), by Father Jonathan Morris?
Yes, I read that. It was respectful, but I respectfully disagree.
