Dear FRiends
It really pains me to see some of those vicious anti-Mormons attacks we see on Free Republic disguised under the freedom of speech. Attacking people based on their Mormon faith is really disgusting and it is an insult to this great forum. People who do not like Governor Mitt Romney based on his positions are free to express their opinion as such, but people who attack him because he is a Mormom should be ashamed of themselves and must not be allowed to do so.
I greatly hope that Free Republic members and moderators will get together and help in stopping this anti-Mormon vitriol, this great Free Republic must not be tainted by these shameless acts.
Review the threads.
Most comments are backed with facts. Some are nasty.
I disagree with JVeritas on this one.
I dislike personal attacks, and I dislike attacks on ones religion. However, if discrepancies exist in the doctrines of ones religion,(or any other belief) it should be noted.

Bingo! You’ve nailed it.
I know a number of posters who feel my criticisms of the government schools deserve banning.
Mormons probably ought to sign on to that one too!
Simplifies so much stuff that goes on you know.
I have a question about these “attacks.” If Governor Romney wins the nomination, do you think the MSM will refrain from bringing up the same doctrinal differences 24/7 between his nomination and the election? Most on Free Republic have a discerning mind and can find the truth for themselves. Many of our brethren in our great nation will hear this and stay home. A rumor that Bob Dole was pro-abortion helped cost him Catholic votes that would have made a huge difference.
If a man running for president belonged to a polytheistic religion, or was Islamic, would that be grounds to call into question their qualification for the office? To many, LDS is that far from Christianity.
With that said, there is a difference between pointing out problems with a candidate in a reasoned format and vitriolic attacks. I’m not sure if I could refrain from the latter if a Muslim were in the Republican nomination process. I would try. We have no need for the vitriolic attacks with no reasoning behind them. I have also been fortunate to not see these. Perhaps it is because I have despaired of trying reason on the followers of the two Governors in the race.

There remains a very committed portion of the FR membership that discusses, debates, and often disagrees... on matters of theology and practice....
A huge "most" of it quite within the bounds of dignity and civil conversation...
Are you suggesting those contributors should not discuss the matters of their deepest convictions here??
A Scout is Brave - He sometimes must say what is right that others may not want to hear.
A Scout is Reverant - He is respectful of others religious beliefs.
“We don’t want to go there. Trouble is, free speech must allow for things like ‘bigotry’. Else, it isn’t free.”
Only in the PC world. Forget about “allow for it”. One must not stand for it. One must call bigotry for what it is whenever someone else espouses it. Baptist, Mormon, Muslim, etc. THAT is free speech.
I know you’re kidding, but my son became a Bahai and I sure as he!! have had it with the Bahai’s, for more than one reason.
You’re probably right on both accounts here, especially the second. I live slap right slap in the middle of the most Baptist area of the US. They even have religious police who confiscate your beer if you duck across the state line to Tennessee to buy some. People who have an occasional glass of wine with a meal here are prayed for.
And if Romney was a Scientologist, Hare Krishna, a member of Heaven's Gate, or a Wiccan, the 'attacks' would be the same.
It is perfectly okay to question the fitness of a cult member to become the GOP nominee.
It is okay to vote against a cult member for that reason too.
Religious freedom doesn't trump either free speech or common sense when one steps into the voting booth.
If Romney truly believes LDS tenets, he is manifestly unfit to be president...and should only be considered in the general election as the lesser of two evils if the GOP is collectively stupid enough to nominate him.
But I'm really gonna come down on those Southern Baptists, especially those Missouri Synod jerks!
THIS is exactly why Mitt can NOT and will NOT be the GOP nominee.
you don’t have to agree to be respectful, old scout.
Wow, using LDS own documents to show others the contradiction between what mormons publicly claim versus privately believe is now mormon-bashing??? And yet nowhere have you mentioned the 'Apostate-bashing' mormons engage in. So I'm to assume that its okay for a mormon to bash a 'mainstream' Christian but not okay for said 'mainstream' Christian to defend his faith???? Wow, and I thought this was a free republic.
The demons believe...and tremble.
Of course this is based on the Parable of the Good Samaritan. I do not accept that the LDS is theologically correct, but all of the members I have met are admirable people. (Love the Mormon Choir's Messiah, too)
I agree with you, as well. I am a former Mormon, and have many Mormon friends and relatives.
To: Brainhose
There are legitimate criticisms of Huckabee. This isn’t one of them. The Book of Mormon and teachings of Joseph Smith contradict the Bible. No Bible-believing Christian could possible except either as legitimate.
Now, it’s dumb to alienate Mormons in the political arena but to accuse Huckabee of being bigoted for disagreeing with Mormon teachings that contradict Biblical teachings is a disgraceful, LIBERAL tactic.

Couldn’t agree with you more.
The mormon threads are so frequent around here that some day, when you do a google search of mormonism, Freerepuplic will pop up!
I do not vote on thelogical bounds. I vote for many a heretic, many a time. It does not bother me.
If I was to vote along theological lines I'd have to write in a real Catholic like either Sam Brownback or Jeb Bush. Rudy, my co-religionist is by my mind an apostate given his view on abortion and his invalid (latest) marraige.
Today I'd vote for Fred as he's the consistent conservative with foreign policy experience and a leader of men.
