After his beloved beagle mix, Edna, disappeared on Halloween night, Bill Whiting did what any dog owner might: He offered a reward in posted fliers around the neighborhood and anxiously waited for a call, MyFoxPhilly.com reports.
When the phone rang, however, the news was not what he was expecting.
"He said, ‘Mister, I got your dog. You don't believe it? You want me to hurt it so you can hear?’ I pleaded with them not to hurt the dog," Whiting said of the caller, one of several kids who he recalled has a "young voice" and apparently is holding for ransom Edna, his canine companion of more than 12 years.
The distressed dog owner said the boy threatened to kill Edna if he does not hand over a large sum of money; he already had offered $500 for the canine's safe return.
Edna is a lovable, medium-sized dog with pointy ears, said Whiting, who thinks she may have slipped out of the house as he opened and closed the door to hand out Halloween candy.
"Kids were ringing the doorbell continuously and the door was open more than it was closed. At some point I called for Edna and I thought she was under the sofa or something … but there was no Edna," Whiting said.
Police have no leads so far and the call was traced to a disposable phone; the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is posting a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone responsible for taking and possibly harming the dog.

This one is real simple: tell the guy to come get his money at the drop point - then hide out, wait, and if he looks like he’s over 16 beat the **** out of him when he shows up, since obviously he is dangerous and you are in fear for your life. Make sure to ruin his nice shoes and jacket while you’re at it.
It’s nothing a tire iron couldn’t handle.
{{{SIGH}}}I know it doesn’t sound very Christian of me... I hope God forgives me for wanting to take out the trash. I guess I need to pray that someone will turn in the dog and the kid so it will all work out well.
But I think I would be sorely tempted to try not sparing the rod - if you can count a crowbar as a “rod”...
Okay, I’m confused. Why in the heck did Fox do this story today as if the dog was still alive?
I admit I haven’t read the entire article. It makes me too sad.
This child needs gratis help from the professionals to recover his pet. What a great gift to unite the owner and pet.
I would be the first to volunteer if I had the expertise. How I wish.

And I also don’t know for sure if Edna is dead.
But I would bet on it.

If it is true, those bastards need to do jail time big time although that will not bring her back.
All that we know is these li'l a*****s are willing to make a dog yelp. They could have pinched their own dog's ear or paw to make it yelp. As for the collar jingling...If you hear one dog collar with two or more tags (license tag, ID tag) jingle, you've heard them all.
MAYBE the thugs have the dog, tortured her, and then killed her...Or maybe they saw the posters and thought calling him up to torture him by making their own or some stray dog yelp would be fun...Who knows?
It could even be that Edna was killed (hopefully instantly) by a car, and the thugs found the body, took the collar off the corpse , and got the bright idea to have a little fun.
Maybe Edna's dead, maybe she's at the pound, maybe she's been taken in by some family quite a distance away.
In absence of Edna's body, I am going to hope the poor dog is still alive-or if dead, at least she wasn't tortured.
I hope they get the monsters. Regardless of if they ever had Edna, they are still monsters and need to be punished for tormenting that poor man.
No proof what so ever that this is true. Even the previous story is void of verifiable fact.
I don't think people like this are salvageable. They just need to be shot, and their bodies made into dog food. I have no problem with that at all.
They aren't. They aren't people, but monsters. You had it right in the first sentence.
We are just sick over this out here in Colorado. Why are we just now hearing of this story if they think Edna has been killed. Can anyone provide clarity? We are worried about Edna.
