Sam Adams has created the limited edition Samuel Adams Utopias the latest in their Extreme Beers line of sipping beers. Samuel Adams is releasing 8,000 bottles of the kettle-shaped bottle reminiscent of the copper brewing kettles used by brewmasters for hundreds of years. The Utopia is 25% alcohol and therefore the "strongest beer in the world." For the 2005 edition, the brewers aged the beer in single-use bourbon casks to give the new brew a richer flavor than the 2003 release.
The Samuel Adams Utopias 2005 edition costs $100 per bottle which sounds pricey but the brew is meant to be consumed in two-ounce servings like a port or dessert wine.
Anybody tried it?
It sounds like Utopia if your Sam Adam’s accountant.
Sam, you made the price too big.
I bet it tastes like crap, but if someone wants to drop a Ben Franklin on it, be my guest.
The 2007 edition is $120-$140 a bottle, 27% alcohol by volume:
Thanks for the update.
Do I remember correctly that Sam Adams is owned by the same company as Miller? (of Folsom Street Fair support fame...)
That I do not know.

Beer Ping!

I had forgotten the beers on that list myself, other than they were Miller products. All things being equal though, Hamms might be the most disgusting beer ever brewed.
Had a friend in WA ask me if I could get Utopias for him, seems they won't ship it there. After I told him what it was going for online, he said forget it, unless he gets a big bonus!
I saw it also.
The whole show had me licking my lips.

Maybe it’s just me, but it doesn’t sound good. 25% alcohol is simply too high to make a tasty beer, IMHO.
$100 is DEFINITELY too high a price! (”...is that for a whole keg?”)
But if someone bought me a bottle, I’d willingly “sip” some.

... and Hamms was the first beer I ever tried. Dad was a teetotaler (actually more like a militant prohibitionist!) so we didn’t have it in the house.
My best buddy was a paperboy. One Sunday morning on his route he found part of a six-pack of Hamm’s someone flung out of their car the night before (we presume).
So we found an isolated place, popped a can and had our first sip of beer. YUCK! Stunted my beer-drinking desires for several years. Little did I know that not ALL beer tastes that bad.
Over the past twenty years, there has been a veritable race among brewers and vintners to higher alcohol content in beers and wines. Why? Have the nightly drunks been complaining about the excessive time between the snap-top can or the cork and their euphoric, stumbling enlightenment?
Hamms. Recycled bear whizz!
