Anyone know who wrote this? (vanity)

Posted on 11/25/2007 12:12:44 PM PST by rottndog

Looking for the author of the following:

"For those who manned the battle line the bugle whispers low--- and Freedom has a taste and price the protected never know..."

TOPICS: Chit/Chat; Poetry
KEYWORDS: military; poems
All I can find so far is "Author Unknown". There are hints that it was Walt Whitman, but as yet I have been unable to find it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I found this: ‘For those who have served, freedom has a taste-—and a price-—that the protected will never know.’

(Found written on a piece of C-Rat box cardboard, and nailed to a tree outside a firebase near Khe Sahn, RVN,
>1965.)”

And I found this: “For those who fought for it, freedom has a taste the protected will never know.”

Then there is this: “For those who have fought for it,
freedom has a taste the protected will never know.”
- An American Soldier in Iraq, 2003

I appears that “Author Unknown” may just be your answer. Good luck.

Haven’t confirmed this from a literary site but author may be General Patton:
“freedom has a taste, and for those that have fought for it, the taste is so sweet the protected will never know...” General George Patton

Possible answer:

Unknown author For those who manned the battle line the bugle whispers low-— and Freedom has a taste and price the protected never know.. It’s not from “Song Of Myself”- by Walt Whitman From the book “Leaves of Grass” ...(Answered by Blah)

I used to see this quote written on helmets covers in Vietnam.

Just an FYI: I searched thru Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass” for just the word “freedom” (on www.bartleby.com); couldn’t find this quotation or anything resembling it. (Like the pit bull terriers on the sweatshirt I’m wearing, I’m not letting this one go yet! Please, please ping me if you get a definitive answer.)
