Fleeing Robbery Suspect Eaten By Alligator

MIAMI -- A Florida man police said was breaking into cars at Miccosukee Resort and Gaming was attacked and killed by a 9-foot alligator while trying to run from police.

Investigators said officers responded to reports of car break-ins at a Miccosukee Indian Reservation parking lot located at 500 S.W. 177th Ave. in Miami.

One of the men was quickly captured by officers during the incident last week but the other robbery suspect tried to elude officer by jumping into a large pond behind the facility, according to a WJXT-TV report.

During the swim, police said, an alligator attacked and killed the man. He was apparently bitten on the head several times.

The victim's body was recovered at the bottom of the pond about a day after the reported break-ins.

The men were not identified in the report.

Meanwhile, an alligator believed responsible for attacking and then killing the man was captured and transported to All American Gator in Pembroke Park.

"Some alligators just have a nasty disposition and he was just a nasty gator," owner of All American Gator Brian Woods said. "He seemed to have no fear of people."

The alligator is being kept in storage until the medical examiner's office can inspect the reptile, a trapper said.

Miccosukee employees said the alligator was well-known on the reservation and was given the nickname "Poncho."

"Anytime an alligator digests or even kills a person, it is a state law through the Florida Fish and Game that the gator be destroyed," Woods said.

Being from the Sunshine state, I am aware of the gators that are around when I am down visiting. What is funny is the concern that my friends from up here have when they visit. They think that once they cross the state line they will be eaten. Only by mosquito's, I assure them :>)

Rule #3. Never jump into a pond in Florida.

Addendum: OR S.C.,N.C.,Ga.,La.....Just got back from a golf trip in Hilton Head and saw about 15-20 sunning on the banks edge...I gotta believe thier disposition would be pretty crummy if I jumped in the lakes. Thier teeth/jaws would win all the time...just not fair :)

That's only in Louisiana. The mosquito's there come in two sizes, the ones small enough to go through a screen door and those big enough to open it.

I once saw a skeeter so big, it landed at Miami airport, and they had it halfway full of gas before they realized it wasn’t a regular flight :>)

“He was apparently bitten on the head several times.”

He wanted a car but all he got was an alligator hat.

Florida should adopt death by alligator as their new method of capital punishment.

Sounds about right. My sister works FAA in the tower at the Hollywood Executive airport. That's why I have a lifetime pass on Greyhound :)

I really enjoyed the casual wording of this part of the article:

“During the swim, police said, an alligator attacked and killed the man. He was apparently bitten on the head several times.

The victim’s body was recovered at the bottom of the pond about a day after the reported break-ins.”

No heroic measures on the part of the police to continue pursuit into the pond or attempt to save the thief from his folly. Just an, “Oh well, his body will turn up sometime. Or not.”

Undoubtedly the actual scene was frantic and I feel for any cops who witnessed the attack, but I’m glad no innocent parties were harmed as the crook became, er, *got* his just desserts.

Stupid SHOULD hurt!

In Houston, newcomers are advised to only rent only second-story and above apartments. The cockroaches are too big to climb the stairs.
