Lowe's refuses to call them "Christmas trees," chooses to call them "Family trees"

Lowe's refuses to call them "Christmas trees," chooses to call them "Family trees"

Dear R J, In an effort to avoid the use of the term "Christmas tree," Lowe's has renamed their Christmas trees and are now calling them "Family trees." In their Holiday 2007 catalog, containing 56 pages of Christmas gifts, Lowe's advertises hundreds of gift items, including scores of "Family trees." In fact, the word "Christmas" only appears two times in the entire holiday catalog. The ads mentioning "Christmas cover only 12 square inches of the 5236 square inches available. Lowe's even has one of their Family trees turned upside down on a stand. We are not sure what the significance of that is. Lowe's evidently did not want to offend any non-Christians, therefore they replaced "Christmas tree" with "Family tree." Of course, if Christians are offended that is evidently ok. An on-line search of Lowe's does reference some "Christmas" items. In fact, a word search of their Web site gives the exact same number 174 of the word "Christmas" as it does the word "holiday." Most of the items mentioning Christmas appear to use the promotional line given by the manufacturer. Their Holiday 2007 catalog features scores of products, including lights, wreaths, trees, and yard decorations. Most people would associate these items with Christmas, but not Lowe's! Except for two obscure references, they refer to everything in their catalog as "holiday." Click here to see the front cover of the catalog and a page featuring their "Family trees" catalog ad.

The Tannenbaum is whatever you want to call it. Who cares what the space aliens from Lowe’s call it? Put real candles on it, too.

And the PC crap over “Christmas” continues. Naively we thought this year that PC would be out after all the outrage of previous years.

We were at a Home Depot in Riverside recently where we found a very extensive Christmas friendly atmosphere that made us excited about this coming Christmas. We purchased a number of decorative items for this year, and we are going back for more. Good for Home Depot.

NO...We don’t work for, or are associated with that company in any manner. Just a customer that loves Christmas.

I work part-time as a cashier at Lowes and am not aware of this. And we can wish the customers a Merry Christmas.

I do not have any confirmation of the truth of this. The link to the catalogue looks like a real catalogue so I thought it looked legit enough to post.

Here is a link to the American Family Association website that sent out the “alert.” They say that Lowe’s has contacted them and apologized for the catalogue and say that they will call them “Christmas Trees” in their fliers. But they put out the catalogue as “Family Trees” and the Daily Kos has a lovely article today saying that “Family Tree” sounds so inclusive!

Seems to me that Lowe’s is trying to have it’s anti-Christian “Family Tree” cake putting out the catalogue and eating it too by claiming that it was a “mistake.”

I only ask for confusion because by the time the AFA stuff gets to me the issue has been resolved.

I really like Lowe’s. I’d hate to have to switch.

Daily Kos has so little connection to real life he probably thinks Tooth Decay is a Unifying Force.

Yah, I think that the issue isn’t resolved at all. They put out the catalogue advertising family trees. How do you take that back?

They put “Christmas” 270 times on their web site and put out an add without Christmas and people want to attack them.

Very odd.

Looks like they admitted the error and an advertising company won’t be doing business with them anymore.

And I was going to post:
“Family Trees” they are discriminating against ‘Singles’Trees
Not it just doesn’t work...lol

I stopped buying from Lowes when they started treating men in their commercials as bumbling idiots.

Every commercial is like that. You can count on the man/dad to be the idiot in every commercial.

Well, its not a major point but I did do the Google site search for "Christmas" on lowes.com and I did post a screen shot and it shows Christmas used about 270 times on the Lowes site.

Hobby Lobby sells them - I thought they were a neat novelty item, and I was about to get one. Given Lowe's BDS, I think I will, now!
