Wal-Mart To Start Black Friday Pricing Early (HD DVD players less than $100!)

[Wal-Mart] Wednesday said it would start its Black Friday and holiday pricing early on some items, in a move to drive sales during the increasingly competitive holiday shopping season. Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, said it will offer Black-Friday prices three weeks early by unveiling "secret" in-store specials. The company said it will offer discounts on five popular gift items. Wal-Mart plans to reveal discounts on its Web site on Thursday. The items will be available in stores beginning Friday morning, Nov. 2 as it officially opens its special Christmas shops. The day after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest shopping days of the year and is known as "Black Friday" in the retail industry because retailers earn so much on this single day they are able to swing to profitability.

Regular DVDs will play in any HD DVD player, while HD DVDs will NOT play in a standard DVD player - so you have the option of buying regular or HD DVDs, with the bonus that the regular DVDs will be upscaled and look even better than they do in a regular player.

But Betamax Blu-Ray is superior technology. Betamax Blu-Ray will remain the standard for connoisseurs...

Yes, it's true; in both cases.
I am not a connoisseur, I just bought the "wrong" format and had too many tapes to get rid of it when VHS caught up on the quality without the inflated price.

SONY caught on too late. I see a repeat with HD DVD; In addition, the companies allied with Blu-Ray are way too chummy with SONY and Microsoft and their damned "protected content" cripping of their latest operating system to make me feel comfortable.

I saw a DVD player in a Shop-Rite store this AM for $69.95

Will it play HD DVD? Nope. For not much more, you can get a player that will handle all current DVDs and is ready for the future of high definition.

There is a radio station in Kansas City that started it’s “All Christmas Music All The Time” yesterday

One here in Indiana started at the beginning of October. And Christmas merchandise was side by side with Halloween stuff at pretty much every department store.

At my local WalMart last year, a white woman was elbowed and shoved by black youths on Black Friday, and they yelled "white bitch" as they grabbed one of the last items out of her hands. I watched as WalMart staff did absolutely nothing. We called the local news. They weren't interested.

And that it happened at Wal-Mart is what is important right? Surely it could never happen at Target, K-Mart, Costco, BJs, or any other big retailer.

From what I've seen at the Wal Mart in Princeton, every friday is "Black and Brown" Friday, judging from the shoppers.

It will be interesting to see what happens when they build the new Wally World in Trenton. For now, at least half of the shoppers at the Princeton Wal Mart drive or take a bus from Trenton.

people shop the day after thanksgiving? i thought that was a free vacation day for hunting!

They are basically the same things. But hunting uses firearms and shopping is hand to hand combat.

Wal Mart does this every year. Several years back when DVD players were still a little pricey they offered one for about $29. Everyone I knew who got one said it was non functioning within 3 months.

Homo Depot is a major cruising area for queers in this part of the country. No thanks. And yes, the workers are clueless.

"FYI, Those cheap HD DVD players are only 1080i.

While we're on the subject, do you notice any difference between 1080i and 1080p? I know the technical difference, and I know that 1080p is supposed to be better, but even on a 60" screen I've heard that you can hardly tell one from the other -- unless you're a salesman, of course.

I’d love to get one but I’m not getting up at 4AM to get in line for it.

Many a Wal-Mart is open 24 hours. I wonder if midnight will be the starting time for the sale.

I can also afford the overpriced stores, but up untill 6 months ago when I retired from the Marine Corps we had to live on a tight budget, so Wal-Mart has been our choice.
Old habits die hard, and I figure why spend more for the same thing, when I can shop at Wal-Mart, save some cash, and now I can take Mrs Castillo on the vacations she deserves but we couldn’t afford when I was on active duty.
Plus I get the added bonus of not having to deal with snobs like Bogtrotter!

I would rather go elsewhere and pay 20 bucks more rather than go to Walmart and push my way through the crowds of oafs there.

Yes, the extra cost is worth it for the momentary illusion that I still live in a first-world, developed nation.

>>Is there any particular reason you like HD over Blu-Ray?
I’ve kept out of the format wars because I don’t have an HD TV yet and I figured I’d just wait until the format was unified or players commonly played both formats.
<<

If they’re under a hundred bucks, get both players!

Now you can have 8-track AND cassette!
