Reggae Star Killed in South Africa Carjacking
The New York Times ^ | October 20, 2007 | MICHAEL WINES

Posted on 10/20/2007 10:28:43 PM PDT by george76

A team of gunmen shot and killed Lucky Dube, an international reggae star and one of the nation’s best-known musicians, apparently in a carjacking attempt late Thursday that underscored the continuing peril of violent crime here.

As the provincial police commissioner appointed seven veteran investigators to chase down the attackers, President Thabo Mbeki called on the nation “to confront this terrible scourge of crime, which has taken the lives of too many of our people, and does so every day.”

The police said Mr. Dube, 43, was shot by three assailants in Rosettenville, just south of downtown Johannesburg...

The attackers fled after Mr. Dube crashed his Chrysler into a tree. He died at the scene.

The principal opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, said, “The circumstances surrounding his murder again illustrate that violent crime in South Africa is out of control, and that the government’s remedies to address this scourge have failed.”

South Africa has reduced the homicide rate by 41 percent since becoming a democracy in 1994, experts say, but the pace of killings and other violent crimes remains among the world’s highest, and attacks both on ordinary citizens and on high-profile figures, including politicians and the police, are a daily occurrence.

Figures for the last annual reporting period...

homicides rose to 19,200, a 3.5 percent increase, reversing a long drift downward.

Aggravated robberies, in which criminals assault and rob victims, leaped by nearly 6 percent, to more than 126,000.

And carjackings rose 6 percent, to a level not seen in four years.

I guess his luck ran out.

I'm sorry, that was bad. I couldn't help myself.

55 people per day murdered. WHat is population? That is like 2 plus people, every hour of the day.

Unlucky Dube gets smoked. I’m going to assume this was black on black crime. S Africa, only talked about as a success, the ending of apartheid. MSM never talks about the fact that since this freedom, they have complete anarchy.

So, if the size of the USA, three hundred, that would be 120k murdered per year, or about 300 something per day? Internal genocide going on?

The Soccer World Cup is slated to occur in 2010 in South Africa. The guys who awarded the cup...had only one serious question after they committed themselves to South Africa...could they build enough stadiums and hotel to handle the inflow of a million fans from across the globe for three weeks? Even today...with minor strikes still occuring on stadium projects...they still can’t be sure and both the US and Australia are quietly being surveyed as the potential back-up point...should they fail.

What the committee never really reviewed during this process...is the amount of crime...especially violent crime on soccer fans. The media have brought this up continually over the past year...so its starting to be a minor topic that the committee discusses each month as they chat with South Africa. You have to remember...NOT ONE single soccer fan died in Germany from a violent act (there were some car accidents-deaths and some heart attacks).

My guess...over 50 international fans will die before the games end in 2010. It will be a nightly topic of discussion via all the networks covering the sport. I’m guessing that the South African police will be working seven days a week...12 hours a day...and still not be able to halt the violent robberies and carjackings. Whatever view they hopped would occur from a positive image of the games...will be lost in the end.

We have heard brutal reports.

The real crime rate may be well higher than the official numbers.

President Thabo Mbeki called on the nation “to confront this terrible scourge of crime, which has taken the lives of too many of our people, and does so every day.”

You can't have it both ways. You can't tacitly wink at violence against whites as revolutionary justice of the oppressed--the stock-in-trade of the ANC--and then condemn it when the unlucky civilians are black.

You can't put anarchy back into the bottle.

Population of Johannesburg in 2006 was estimated at 9 million... the total number of carjackings in Johannesburg alone in the first 10 months of 2006? 8,800..averaged out at 29 per day, including Saturdays and Sundays.

Johannesburg also happens to be the rape capital of the world..

Back in the 80s, I watched a black South African citizen as he said he “wished Apartheid was back”. (On an MSM station!) =8^0
