Chris Pine CONFIRMED as Kirk in Star Trek Posted on Monday, October 15th, 2007 at 12:27 pm by: Peter Sciretta

Chris Pine has dropped out of playing Junior Stemmons in Joe Carnahan’s White Jazz, which means he’s 100% confirmed to play Kirk in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek. I know, I know, we already had a Carnahan story earlier today, but this is some breaking news as Pine was undecided when the news broke a couple days back that he was Abrams final choice for the role of Kirk.

Yes, Bertram “Bertie” Wooster would be a good choice.

You actually LIKED Reign of Fire??? Good grief, I sat through that with neices and newphews, thinking, “Why Oh Why didn’t I take the BLUE pill?” Lousy, horrible, awful. I have zero good memories of that movie.

In case you were wondering, I didn’t like it...

I saw Nichelle Nichols appear on this season’s “Heroes”, and was glad for the addition. Lots of Star Trek actors in there, though George Takei’s character bit it...

The movie may have just started out (it was the first to be made so I see the point) as “Star Wars” and the next two had titles added but it was obvious from the first moment on the screen - EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE.

I remember reading in geeky Sci-Fi mags, even back then, that Lucas had actually planned on NINE episodes to tell the entire story.

So, to me at least and I’m sure many others, I don’t consider the last three movies to be prequels.

Either way, they sucked! lol

For what it's worth, I liked the movie a lot.

Lots and lots of eye candy for the female viewer...ear candy, too, in Gerard Butler's case...

For fun......y’all go rent “Reign of Fire”. Great movie, highly underrated.

I remember that one. It was good.

Oh, I see what you're saying.

I remember reading in geeky Sci-Fi mags, even back then, that Lucas had actually planned on NINE episodes to tell the entire story.

Actually at one point he even claimed there were twelve episodes! Anyway, yes, the "prequels" do suck. It was the biggest disappointment of any movie series ever.

And back to Star Trek, Pine looks like a good choice. I had once pegged the host for "Treasure Hunters" as a possible Kirk contender since he delivered all of his lines just like Shatner, and looked pretty damn close to him as well.

Horrible.

There is only one Kirk.

I am strongly against this remake of a classic.

They are raping Roddenberrys work.

Disgusting.

Many classic roles have been successfully recast ...

James Bond - Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig. Many were outraged that they recast after Sean Connery’s Bond ... but they’ve gone on to make 21 succesful James Bond movies, including mega-hits since the Brosnan days. And, the newest one (Casino Royale) may be the best of the group.

Superman/ Clark Kent - George Reeves (The Adventures of Superman), Christopher Reeve (Superman: The Movie - Superman IV), Dean Cain (Lois & Clark), Tom Welling (Smallville), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, The Man of Steel). To many, Christopher Reeve was irreplaceable ... but the Superman franchise continues, nonetheless ... and they’re recasting the role again for a Justice League movie.

Batman - Adam West (Batman TV), Michael Keaton (Batman & Returns), Val Kilmer (Batman Forever), George Clooney (Batman & Robin), Christisn Bale (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight). Michael Keaton was the original movie Batman ... but few would contest that Christian Bale’s newest adaptation is the best of the group.

I’d bet money that Indiana Jones is recast for a new series of movies after Harrison Ford steps down.

Even Star Trek went through similar controversy when they started with the new crew in Star Trek: The Next Generation ... but TNG revitalized the franchise, and spawned 4 new series, and 4 movies that wouldn’t have been made if the Trek franchise had been left for dead after Kirk’s crew stopped making films. Without the rethinking of the franchise, it would’ve ended decades ago.

Overall, Captain Kirk is a tough role to recast ... but no tougher than Connery’s Bond or Reeve’s Superman. In fact, it is probably easier to recast Kirk since Shatner hasn’t played the role in 13 years - since Star Trek Generations in 1994. Connery’s Bond flowed right into Lazenby and Moore.

I sincerely hope that “Captain Kirk” can transcend William Shatner as “James Bond” and “Superman” have transcended their original actors. I would certainly rather see Captain Kirk and Star Trek live on in another actor, rather than seeing the role and franchise die.

Its time to mint a new generation of Trekkies ... and returning to the roots of the series (Kirk, Spock, etc.)might just be the way to do it - just as Batman Begins and Casino Royale did for their respective franchises.

H

TOS characters are not those other characters from books and comics.
They were born on TV, created with the input of the actors themselves sometimes, and they have been played by the same actors for decades.

This is a raping of a classic.
Hollywood is suffering from remakeitis and now Trek has caught it. Sad.
Trek deserves better then this.

They should have gotten Manny Coto and started a new series in the *spirit* or Roddenberrys vision, one that could unite the fans again.

But that would require creative courage.
They are creativly bankrupt.

Nobody can ever fill the orginal casts shoes.

EVER.

I reject this for what it is.

Creative bankuptcy and raping of a classic.

No thanks.

Hope people looking forward to it enjoy it.

I hope it bombs as it deserves to.

This putz has been cast as Leonard McCoy.

So in this rendition McCoy is a Newzealander and not a southern doctor who also attended my ala mater, Ole Miss, who was known by the gentleman styling of a real southerner who had thought about a career in medicine before he got into acting, and making McCoy his trademark role.

Just another reason to skip bizzarro Trek.
