ATK Lightweight 25mm (LW25) Brings Chain Gun(R) Lethality, Flexibility and Reliability to Remote Weapon Station Applications In its First Public Appearance, Cannon is Integrated into CROWS Mounted on Up-Armored HMMWV

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK - News) is unveiling its newest Chain Gun®, the Lightweight 25mm (LW25), at the AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington D.C. today. The system has been integrated into the Common Remotely Operated Weapons Station (CROWS) and mounted on an up-armored HMMWV for the event.

"ATK's Lightweight 25 cannon offers enhanced lethality, flexibility and reliability for numerous combat platforms such as the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), Stryker, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle (MRAP) and Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV)," said ATK Ammunition Systems Group President Mark DeYoung. "Because the Lightweight 25 can be remotely-operated from inside the protection of an armored vehicle, it is the natural choice for future light armaments."

The LW25 features a dual feed system with first-round-select. This allows the warfighter to switch between two different types of ammunition with the flick of a switch. The LW25 system will employ a full compliment of training and tactical ammunition that includes: target practice, less lethal, armor piercing and high explosive rounds. Most importantly, the LW25 will be capable of firing airburst munitions that leverage ATK's turns count fuze technology used in the 30mm MK310 Programmable Airburst Munitions (PABM) currently under qualification by the U. S. Navy for the U. S. Marine Corps' Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle.

Compared to the MK19 40mm grenade machine gun, used in most remote weapon stations today, the LW25 system offers greater range and lethality, twice the projectile velocity, with a 30% weight reduction in ammunition

Hasn’t there been a 25 MM gun on the Bradley since the 1980s?

This is for the HMMWV which is a smaller platform then the Bradley. I guess the new thing is that this 25mm Cannon is light weight enough to be mounted on a Hummer.
