I've been playing around with this OS for about two years now. Finally, it's getting serious. It's VERY close to Beta, right now! Pretty stable for me, and, I have been able to install it, and install a lot of MS apps on it, with great success.

ReactOS needs beta testers and programmers/developers to help submit bug reports and fix bugs, and even implement features.

Many of us whine and cry about MS often, some of us have migrated, either partially or fully, to Linux and Mac. But ReactOS offers something no one else does. True Windows application operability. This, alone, can save you money.

I encourage each of you to, at least, visit their website. Better yet, d/l an iso and get started, or donate a few quarters to the cause.

Thanks.

Checked out this ReactOS about two years ago, when I bought my new computer. Wanted to play around with a different OS. It wasn’t even in beta release at the time, so I moved on. Sent away for a Ubuntu CD and have been satisfied with it as a backup. Thanks for the post.

Question: What are minimum hardware requirements for running ReactOS?

ReactOS currently only supports the x86 processor architecture, although a PowerPC port is in the planning stage. ReactOS will run on Intel(R) Pentium(R) x64, Intel Xeon(R) x64, AMD(R) Athlon(R) x64 and AMD Opteron(R) processors in 32-bit mode, but the 64-bit functionality of these processors is not currently supported.
See Compatibility Database for a list of supported device drivers.

I have it running on a P166 w/64 MB Ram, and a dual proc AMD 2800MP w/1 GB Ram currently.
I have an old HP Quad proc. (486 DX4-100) I was thinking of bringing down from the attic and trying it on. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

I am really surprised at how many Windows apps. install and work.

HP Quad proc. (486 DX4-100)

I rember those as being clock-tripled 486/33's (I'm convinced that whoever was in charge of naming the 386 and 486 processors suffered from some weird multiple personality disorder),but I'm drawing a blank on quad configurations.

If it runs on that PC hardware, then it should run like a charm on my old Compaq Presario - 667 megahertz processor w/384 MB Ram. Right now I've got Win98SE and Ubuntu Dapper Dan 6.06 LTS running on it now. Wonder if I can have three OS`s installed on one PC? This could be fun. Thanks papasmurf.

Sure you can. Use a partitioner. When I was a tech I had 8 OS’s on my laptop. :)

I’m running Dapper on my Tosh notebook, that I’m using right now. On the dual prc AMD, I’m buring an iso of Fiesty 7.04 Server, so I can install the latest Horde Groupmail, if I can figure it out. LOL

The HP says Vectra 486/33u on the front, but it was re-configured by Analytical Products. I haven’t even looked at it, before now, in about 5 years.

I imagine that anyone behind the ReactOS design will have a visit from a Microsoft lawyer if any similarities to any part of MS’s operating system are present. MS will charge patent infringement and tie them up in court until we all have Rip Van Winkle beards.

Good point.

One of the reasons it slowed down was, they had some developers that were using MS code. So, they stopped developing, and audited their code base. That took a year. Now, it's pure code, and it's clean.

It is rumored, though no hard proof, that MS has given some technical assistance. Which would make sense for several reasons...

* Development proceeded at a very rapid pace, as soon as the audit was completed, to the point that I could install Firefox, without a glitch. * If successful, it would take some Linux users away Linux. * If successful, MS would still gain because it's able to run MS applications.

Give it a try. You can d/l it as an .ISO , or preconfigured, in a Virtual Machine server, in QEMU, or as a Live CD and not effect your Win install.

My hard-drive is just about full. When I upgrade in a couple of months, I may look at it just for grins. However, I’m no computer guru so if it’s complicated, I’ll give it a pass until the “ReactOS for Dummies” book comes out.

Sounds like something interesting to take a look at... A lot cheaper than buying another Windows XP distribution...
