Obscene fans at Rutgers draw a penalty flag

The play came late in the game, when Rutgers expanded its lead over Navy to a comfortable level after a tight three quarters.
Navy's Reggie Campbell took the kickoff and ran full speed ahead up the middle with all the force his 168-pound body could generate. Campbell, almost always the smallest and fastest man on the field, hit a wall of XXXL-sized scarlet jerseys and was slammed to the ground at the bottom of the pile. He got up slowly, limping off. This gutsy kid, a slotback who already spent three quarters being chased and tackled by gangs of defensive linemen and linebackers, all weighing at least 100 pounds more than him, was then given a dose of Rutgers' student section class.
''You got f---ed up. You got f---ed up. You got f--ed-up," they chanted.

This is a sick syndrome happening at almost all sporting events at almost every age level. People think just because they are at a game they can cuss, swear, be vulgar all they want and it’s OK becasue they are supporting their team or child. It drives me crazy without taking my kids anywhere, and I dread taking my kids to any sporting event. It is degeneracy run amok.

was then given a dose of Rutgers' student section classIf there is one thing I've learned about college sporting events it is this: never judge the fans by the student body. Students by definition are idiots. Being college students specifically, they're going to do something incredibly stupid. I don't know where you live, but where I live, typically the most obnoxious people at games typically are the students.

Without doubt college football fans are some of the goofiest most distasteful people I've ever met.
College football fans from New Jersey are just about beyond words.....

Yep. And it happens at all levels or football. Coaches and kids I can flag and toss if needed. With fans it’s a bit more difficult. But they can be tossed too, or their team forfeits. It works.

Navy and Rutgers have a bit of a history. I went to the Navy - Rutgers game in Annapolis three years ago. Rutgers stayed on the field too long for their warm-ups, holding up the march-on and Navy from entering the field. Navy proceeded to thump them by four or five TDs (Kyle Eccles had a HUGE day). Maybe this is tied to that. But what else is to be expected from a crowd of drunken college students?

I went to the first Rutgers game this year against Buffalo. I was there with my wife and kids, and made the mistake of sitting in the student section. Before the 1st quarter was over, we had moved away, but it is, regretfully, hard to get away from people using foul language around children.
Its not just Rutgers either. I ran into the same problem when I brought my son to a NJ Devil's game.
The offenders always fit the same profile:
Twentysomethings who are drunk off their arses.
More anecdotal evidence that the coarsening of our culture is all too real.

Those students, like so many in New Jersey, contine to disgrace themselves. We might ask, where do these foul-mouthed hoots come from? What elements in the greater society are responsible for them? And, sadly, why do the rest of us choose to ignore them, rather than to correct them?
To: Lurker
Aw c'mon...we hardly even HAD college football in NJ until recently (other than the first ever college football game played--between Rutgers and Princeton on November 6, 1869). At any rate, the Gator fans are no better, the Dawgs fans are no better, the Buckeye fans, and on and on.
For my money, nothing's worse than Jets fans.

For my money, nothing's worse than Jets fans. Eagles fans in the 700-level at old Veterans Stadium were legendary. It was indistinguishable from a trip to the Philadelphia Zoo.

Hey it’s back East and in New Jerzey what else can a person expect.
Some view New Jerzey as the stinking cesspool for New York and I guess these fans are the Muckdivers in that cesspool.

It doesn’t happen just at Rutgers. I have personally witnessed the same rude chants at college sports events and seen/heard them on televised college events.

Will this latest Rutgers/bad language incident result in Gov. Jon Corzine breaking another leg?
