The popular open-source browser Firefox hit another milestone on Friday when it passed the 400 million download mark.
The browser, distributed by Mozilla, appears to be enjoying exponential growth in terms of downloads. From its launch in 2004, it took one year to reach 100 million downloads. A year later, it hit 200 million downloads. Advertisement
In a message posted on its Web site, Spread Firefox, Firefox's community marketeers, thanked users for helping to achieve the latest download figures. "With your amazing efforts, Firefox has reached 400 million downloads and demonstrated that not even the world's most powerful companies can keep people from a better, safer, and faster Web experience," the team wrote.
It is difficult to judge the exact share of the browser market enjoyed by Firefox. The most recent statistics published by W3Counter suggest that Firefox holds a quarter of the market, but most other organizations releasing such statistics suggest a slightly lower figure.
According to figures released on Friday by US consultancy firm Janco and the IT Productivity Center, Firefox currently has 17.4 percent of the browser market--up 5.6 percentage points in the last year. Also within the last year, Microsoft's market-leading Internet Explorer browser dropped 9.6 percentage points to a market share of 63.9 percent.
OSS PING!
Never heard of it or used it.
Re: Firefox hits 400 million downloads
As opposed to MS products, which have 400 million holes!
Downloaded FireFox at least a dozen times....removed it an equal number of times. Just don’t care for it.
Meh, Its not for everyone but it sure is nice to have the choice out there and a robust enough choice to capture 20% of the browser market which for years had virtually no competition..
Been using Firefox for quite a while. Before that I used Opera. Prior to that Netscape and Mosaic. I’ve never actually used IE, except when forced to, and then only briefly.
I’m a recent convert, runs way better than IE. Try a site like MapMyRide.com on each and see which one gives you the better performance.
There is going to be allot of sites that run better on IE because they are built to do so, as Firefox continues to grow (dang near 1/5 now) this will abate a bit and well see more sites written to work on any browser.
I've tried others and they just don't stack up to FF. I guess it's all personal preference and thank goodness there are more choices out there besides MSIE.
MSIE tabbed browsing pales in comparison to Firefox.
While I love tabbed browsing on my windows box expose on OSX (and Kompose on KDE Linux) renders it not all that sweet. The same can be said for safari on osx moving the mouse to the corner and seeing all the open browser windows is so much faster than reading tabs..
Does the tabbed browsing confuse you? Or do you just miss the popup ads?
Ping.
Did you read my post right? I’m saying things already run better on Firefox than they do on IE. But I will admit there are a few sites that don’t run correctly in Firefox because IE lets you get away with more non-standard Javascript than does Firefox.
I just don't like Tabs....as far as pop-ups, I never get pop-ups with IE.
Yea, I can see how such organizational tools could be a real drag.
And extensions, tell me you wouldn't want the ability to granularly control java, java script, and flash code at any website with a tool such as NoScript. Probably one of the best Firefox extensions out there. A functionality that no browser should be without.
What are "popup ads"?
Yeah, I know, no one likes a smartass.
