Word For The Day, Wednesday, September 5, 2007 - benign
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 09/05/2007 | The Janitor

Posted on 09/05/2007 5:53:50 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

benign • \bih-NYNE\ • adjective

1. of a gentle disposition; gracious *
2a. showing kindness and gentleness
2b. favorable, wholesome
3a. of a mild type or character that does not threaten health or life, especially not becoming cancerous
3b. having no significant effect; harmless

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

Mr. Richardson was a benign man and an excellent teacher, and the children loved and trusted him instinctively.

Did you know?
"Benediction," "benefactor," "benefit," "benevolent," and "benign" are just some of the English words that derive from the well-tempered Latin root "bene," which means "well." "Benign" came to English via Anglo-French from the Latin "benignus," which in turn paired "bene" with "gignere," meaning "to beget." "Gignere" has produced a few offspring of its own in English. Its descendants include "congenital," "genius," "germ," "indigenous," and "progenitor," among others.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

“early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy wealthy and wise” : )

So she's up early looking for a smart, physically-fit, rich guy?

I don’t think this incident warrants a resignation. Marriage counseling? Yes. Resignation? No.

I disagree. I think he needs to resign now and let the GOP Governor appoint a GOP Senator to replace him until the next election for the remainder of his term.

He's too much of a distraction, he's gotta go. Not to mention that he pled guilty to an offense and already stated his intention to resign.

Why is it that I NEVER have a passenger that looks like that assigned to the seat next to mine? I would have no problem having her on the plane next to me.

Very clever. Demonstrating the opposite of "benign."

Quinn was the former half of "Quinn and Banana in the Morning" on B94 teenybopper top 40 station during the 80s (and yes, on KQV earlier). His sexual harrassment trial for teasing the news girl opened his mind to the perils of liberalism. He's been doing the morning onservative news talk since the early 90s. It's a good show, now available in many markets and on XM ch 165.

I just wonder why she was flying to Tuscon to go see a doctor? Don’t they have doctors in San Diego? Was she going to a boob job specialist having a sale?

Why? How does this one incident affect his ability to do his elected job?

He has damaged his credibility, he has made a major distraction of himself, and he has given ammo to the opposition that always hold our candidates to a higher standard than their own. He would likely not be able to win a primary challenge. It is better to get him out now and let a new conservative GOP senator get established for the next election.
