First the false quote:
"A moment I've been dreading. George brought his ne're-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida. The one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I'll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they'll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work."
-- Ronald Reagan in his recently published diaries, May 17, 1986.

I heard this one last week from Bill Press, when he was guest-hosting the Ed Schultz radio show. I hadn't known if it was accurate or not, but as soon as I Googled, up it came.
I sent an email to Press, linking the snopes page and urging him to retract the story on the next day's show, as I think there are more than enough indisputably true items out there for anyone who wants to say bad things about George W. Bush. I don't know if he did so -- I only heard a few minutes of the following show. If anyone hears him repeating the story again, however, my respect for him will vastly diminish. (Bad enough that he read it without having checked it out -- he said he hadn't heard anywhere that it wasn't a genuine quote, but considering it took me all of ten seconds to invalidate it, that's sloppy broadcasting to say the least.)

Here is the snopes page debunkiing the quote:

This isn't the first time Bill Press has fallen for something like this:
Bill Press gets taken in by Lovenstein IQ hoax

Ah well, he's in good company. The left wing singer "Moby" has also fallen for the phony quote:

bump
Then it must be true, right Bill?
If a tree falls in a forest and you werent there, did it make a noise?
Of course they never use the following from Reagan’s unpublished diaries. In fact I am writing them now.
“Her huge cankles poured out of her shoes. Her blue pants suit was uncomfortably tight and she has terrible breath. Comparing her to the Devil is unfair to the Devil. I called up Bill and suggested that he rent her out to haunt small cottages!”
— Ronald Reagan in his soon to be published diaries
Good One!!!
That moron Trump also believed the “Lovenstein institute” report and mentioned it prominently in his radio blurb last December. What was remarkable was not only did he fall for this nonsense, but that this presidential IQ report was debunked *years* ago. I guess Trump never got the word on that. Hard to believe in this era of instant communication.
Considering Press thinks Reagan was stupid and the worst president in history, maybe this is a compliment.
Comparing her to the Devil is unfair to the Devil.
Reminds me of Emo Philips joke about his ex-wife - that “she’s been seeing the Devil for lessons in how to be evil. I don’t know how much he’s paying her.”
I love Emo.
Do you have a copy of his unpublished diaries too?
