In the 27 years that Al Chille has been with the Niagara County SPCA, many dogs have had their day.
Lately, its been the pit bulls turn to be notorious.
Between local incidents like the July 8 attack on a toddler, and national cases like the Michael Vick dogfighting scandal, pit bulls have been in the headlines a lot lately.
Were getting all kinds of negative national publicity (for pit bulls), Chille, SPCA executive director, said.
Chille said hes very selective about whom he lets adopt pit bulls though if someone was looking to adopt a pit bull for dogfighting or for breeding, they wouldnt go to the SPCA, since all dogs leaving the SPCA must be spayed or neutered.

I mean “un-neutered” pugs. Or poodles. Or yorkies.
I'm surprised they can use attachments at all.
That little paperclip button is too close to the "send" button.
I saw that report and agree with the new law in Texas.
Spaniel rage is a terrible thing. My brother is a vet and he took me back into his kennel area to show me the most beautiful Springer Spaniel that was affected with spaniel rage. You could see that the caged dog was seething with rage and looking for someone to attack. The family was considering putting him down. Personally I don’t know what was taking them so long. You can always get another dog, and that is from a life long dog lover.
“...breed of peace”

Now that’s just darn funny. I don’t care where you stand on the pitt issue, it’s funny.
Good one. Tried to stop the post but was to late. Sent myself a correction.
I have been told in American it is referred to as a Staff or Staffordshire whilst in Britain that is a different breed or strain.
Would I therefore be right in assuming that it has been developed from the British Staffordshire Bull Terrier who incidentally many years ago and I am sure still goes on was used for illegal fighting.
I believe you are correct.
BTW, I was attacked by a Pit Bull before I knew what one was. It didn't do a bit of damage to me, thanks to the radius of curvature of my ample backside...it couldn't open its jaws wide enough to get a good chomp on me, and I just got some slobber on my butt.
Note that in that case, the owners had chained it so it was close the the sidewalk, so it thought I had entered its territory. I blame the owners, not the dog. But I have no doubt that it would have done serious harm to a child in my place.
hehehe...great reply :-)
But actually, the original was close to the truth. They are bred to "attach" and lock those jaws onto something. :-)
(And yes, I know they aren't actually "locking" in any anatomically different way from other dog jaws.)
At the Pittsburgh humane society, they have a LOT of pit bulls up for adoption. I wouldn’t mind a pit bull mix, but I just wouldn’t feel comfortable with a purebred, unless I could get one as a pup.
I read your sarcasm, and I am right there with you, my civilized friend..
People posing as nice, gentle folk have 101 reasons why they are attracted to pits ~other~ than the power and aggression of this lethal weapon.
There are so many breeds of dogs to be enjoyed with different coats, different colors, different sizes, different personalities, etc., etc., etc.
But for some of our "gentle" friends, it seems that this especially vicious breed is just the only dog that will do.
The kindest thing that I can say about all this is that I once knew a young woman whom I rather liked who had owned a couple of pits (and was an apologist for them although she and her husband had finally had to get rid of them as the dogs escaped every enclosure that they tried and were not warmly received when cruising around the neighborhood). My simple explanation: This young woman -- likeable though she was -- had had the misfortune to spend a lot of her younger life among, well, forgive me, "trash." Rarely, I think, is one able to entirely leave behind one's past. She was doing great and mostly right thinking. Just a few old sentiments from the hood still clinging to her.
So I ask you pit lovers, exactly why is it that you can not satisfy your pleasure in dogs by embracing a breed that is not known first and foremost for viciousness? Why? Why?
Oh, yea, I know. It is your RIGHT to love visious dogs and genius dog peole like yourselves know how to handle them, blah blah blah.
Deaths from pit bulls happen all the time in this country. I hope you feel good that your infantile, narcissistic, aggressive needs are being met by promoting this breed that kills people.
"But if pits were banned, wouldn't it be rottweilers next," you ask. Well, perhaps. And I would not be surprised that being deprived of your pit bull, you might adopt rottweilers as your new very favorite doggie in the whole world. Disgusting, IMO.
Flamebait.
“If pit bulls are outlawed, only outlaws will have pitbulls.”
err... well, they already do.
Actually an entirely separate change iss occurring: home insurance will NOT cover pit bull damages as stated in many new and renewed policies.
Maybe it is Springer rage, I think it is in certain bloodlines of Springer Spaniels.
But personally, I don’t think a dog like that is worth the effort. I’d’ve unloaded him too.
