Buchholz throws no-hitter (Rookie Pitcher Throws No No in 2nd Start!!!)
The Boston Glob ^ | 9/1/07 | Howard Ulman, AP Sports Writer

BOSTON --Clay Buchholz threw a no-hitter in his second major league start, just hours after being called up by the Boston Red Sox.

The lanky Texan baffled Baltimore with an assortment of curves, changeups and fastballs in the Red Sox's 10-0 victory Saturday night. He struck out nine, walked three and hit one batter before the 371st straight sellout crowd at Fenway Park.

"It's amazing. That's all I can say," he said. "I'm in a blur right now."

The crowd stood through the entire ninth inning, cheering every pitch and taking pictures of the young righty in his windup and as he paced around the mound between pitches. A groan rose from the stands when Corey Patterson hit a line drive to center with one out, but Coco Crisp easily moved over to catch it.

Buchholz started Nick Markakis with a ball, then went ahead 1-2 when the batter fouled one off with a check swing. The crowd grew even louder, the flashes were constant, and Buchholz threw a 77 mph curveball that Markakis watched go by.

No one stopped cheering until Buchholz appeared on the centerfield scoreboard for a television interview, and the fans hushed to try to hear him. But when "Clay Buchholz, No-hitter" appeared on the message board, the ballpark erupted anew.

What a great night for this kid and fans in general. The last batter stood there taking pitches instead of trying to swing and break it up.

Here's an interesting little baseball factoid . . .

Most no-hitters in the major leagues are thrown in April and September. April because hitters are still working their way into form at the start of the season, and September because team rosters expand to 40 players and you have a lot of minor-league caliber players in these games.

The O’s line up had most of the regulars in tonight. Baltimore is an uneven team but they won their last series against both the Sox and Yankees. Of course they got beat 30-3 in the last month as well.....

And with that Yankee rookie pitcher Ian Kennedy chalked up his first win today. See you Sox nation this month for those 3 games. Can’t wait.

Yeah, he gets major league meal money but he’s got no place to stay. I wonder if he winds up bunking with one of the players?

If he wanted a place to stay tonight I would bet that plenty of young (and older) women would likely keep him warm tonight.

Kennedy, Hughes, Chamberlain, Masterson, Papelbon etc are all names that will be heard for years to come. That’s the way you keep a good rivalry going. Forget this buying players crap.

A no hitter is as rare as hens teeth. Anytime a pitcher in the majors can throw one they’re on top of their game no question !!!

It’s a good story and baseball is considered a national past time. How many times do I have to read another fluff attempt for Duncan Hunter, or hear that Rudy McRomney Sucks, or Hillary is a criminal or some North American WND hype job?

A nice clean cut young man did something that every little who played ball might dream about.

He’s got a nasty change up to go with a sinking fastball and a big curve. People make a big deal about Jon Lester and Phil Hughes.

Clay is better than both of them.

To those who are "Cuckoo for Coco Crisp," TOO BAD!

One of my collegues was at the game tonight. With tickets I gave him. Not even a fan just was going to be in Boston and wanted to see Fenway. Been to Fenway at least 150 times in my life never seen a no hitter. Never mind a rookie in his second start ever.
