Why does my dog rub its body on dead snakes?
Posted on 09/01/2007 9:20:11 AM PDT by SamAdams76
Whenever I am walking my dog and we see a dead snake on the roadway, my dog likes to rub its body on top. It will flop down and roll over and over on top of the flattened dead snake.
Why does my dog do that? Is it some primordial urge that cannot be explained?

Why does my dog rub its body on dead snakes? It's a Democrat, and it's cozying up to potential campaign contributors.

Assuming this takes place in Massachusetts the question pretty much answers itself, don’t ya think? ;-)

Dogs will roll and rub on anything dead. Fish, birds, snakes, possums, raccoons - if it's dead, lead your dog away from the carcass.

He may have done it just to piss you off. Dogs have really never gotten over the fact that can openers require opposable thumbs. Cats don’t care - they’ll hunt up something gooey for breakfast and crap in your shoes anyway. At some point humans may have been in charge of these relationships but no longer.

So, anyway...I have these new socks... Have you tried the bamboo ones? They are really comfortable.
If you wear them with Crocs you look dorky but your feet sing with joy.

My dogs do that with anything that’s dead. The stinkier the better. At first I thought it was a way to camoflage their smell but, I don’t think that anymore.

Don't pretend that I really know but i've seen them do it and I think it is an instinct the throw predators off their scent?

I dunno. Why does my dog drool when he sees/smells a snake - dead or alive? It’s how we know there’s a snake around - Jack starts drooling.

The most logical explanation is that they do it to mask their own "smell." And from my unscientific observations, it seems to be equally a male/female sort of activity. They come back with the most awful ick caked into their coat, seemingly proud of the stench. Maybe they like getting a bath more than we think. ;-D

Our dogs do the same thing with earthworms. If the worms are dried out, they chew on them a bit, spit them out and roll on them. I was guessing it might serve as some kind of flea or mosquito repellent.
