SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said Wednesday it will release a major package of updates and fixes for the Windows Vista operating system in the first half of 2008.
The company said a "beta" test version of Service Pack 1 will be released "in a few weeks to a moderate sized audience." The SP1 beta includes updates Microsoft has already made to the operating system it started selling to consumers at the end of January.
The service pack fixes some common problems that cause computers to crash or freeze, Microsoft said, including compatibility problems with some newer graphics cards, external monitors and printer drivers. Microsoft said it also fixed some problems users had with putting their PCs to sleep and waking them up again.
The company said SP1 is also expected to improve battery performance, increase the speed of copying files and help Internet Explorer run faster on Vista.
The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker said SP1 also brings several security improvements.
Microsoft said it expects to release Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, Vista's predecessor, in the first half of 2008 as well, but in a statement added that it "should not significantly change the Windows XP experience."
In the past, some of Microsoft's business clients used the release of a service pack as a sign that a new operating system was stable enough to install. Analysts have said Vista seems more reliable out of the box than past versions of Windows, and that businesses need not wait for the service pack.
LOL! I know your point, but most major (if not all) release fixes to their OS on a fairly regular basis.
Mac’s take 5 seconds to boot instead of 5 min with Windows
Mac’s never have failures / error messages compared to one every 15 minutes or so with Windows.
And if you ever have to work with pictures / video / publishing web pages, then Mac’s are simply light years ahead.
"FWIW, I dont know of anybody, except one, thats had even close to a 'good' experience with Vista."
:)
Microsoft employee analysts.
I really want to switch to Macs, but two things hold me back. 1) Macs are way overpriced. But while I’m willing to suck that up I cannot overlook the whole, 2) gaming issue. You really can’t game on a Mac. Sure you can run boot camp or Parallels, but you do so at the direct expense of performance. Those two issues notwithstanding I’d switch in a moment.
My Vista Ultimate on Duo Core runs rings around my other systems running XP SP2. I love Vista.
Just as with XP, Win2K, Win98, etc it is always better to go with a clean machine and avoid the upgrade route which usually leads to frustration. Also upgrading a system with 3 year old hardware or more is just asking for trouble.
Microsoft reminds me a lot of my employer. Never time to do it right the first time, but there’s always time (and money) to fix it later.
“Drivers and compatibility are Vista issues.”
Sorry, but that’s just not true. It is up to companies to upgrade their hardware drivers, not Microsoft. Same thing with non-MS applications. Vista has been around some time now and you can’t blame MS for companies that can’t keep up with the rest of the industry.
How much RAM do you have?
you are correct to ask this question.
I work for a hospital with about 3000 computers on the network. Our Desktop people say that they would not touch Vista for at least another 18 months. In the words of the group leader.... Vista sucks...!
I just bought an IMAC : 20 inch, ,2.4 Ghz dual core with 2 GB RAM. Price about $1700
Here is why it’s a deal. Built in webcam and microphone, don’t need to buy anti virus software, no registry clean up or other maintenance software, upgrades to OS and software are much cheaper.
Add to this the huge productivity increase because of faster boot ups, no crashes and no viruses: it’s well worth the money.
I am not a gamer myself but you can run XP in parallel and even that will run better because the base architecture of the machine is far better.
Ignorant statements such as this only serve to debase your position.
Thanks. I’m very close. I’m going to the local Mac store this weekend to test the whole gaming thing. I know most current Mac users aren’t gamers, but I still can’t understand why Apple won’t at least offer the option of having a decent graphics card. The best you can get in a Pro is GeForce 7300, that’s nearly 3 years old!
They don't need to improve XP, I'm happy with it as it is.
A beta release of SP1 when Vista is hardly out of beta itself.
lol
[Beta: You try it now and we’ll fix it later.]
why not make ‘fixes’ before you sell the product?
