Spielberg’s WOTW was a terrific piece of filmmaking and caught the spirit of the Wells text quite well.
I reread the book and Spielberg’s version was indeed closer to the book than the 1953 version.
However, I still prefer the 1953 version.
“Spielbergs WOTW was a terrific piece of filmmaking and caught the spirit of the Wells text quite well.”
I agree. I think some people see “Tom Cruise” and say a film is dreck. One of the things about the way Wells framed the story was a disconnected society, and especially the main character roving from place to place trying to survive. There is a nomadic fog over the whole story, and Speilburg hit it just right, IMHO.
I thought Cruise did well, also my IMHO. YMMV.
