Maybe Trading Up Soon at Justice? (Chertoff in for Gonzales at AG...)

Maybe Trading Up Soon at Justice August 26, 2007 12:06 PM ET

The buzz among top Bushies is that beleaguered Attorney General Alberto Gonzales finally plans to depart and will be replaced by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Why Chertoff? Officials say he's got fans on Capitol Hill, is untouched by the Justice prosecutor scandal, and has more experience than Gonzales did, having served as a federal judge and assistant attorney general.

Wedding Prep: Getting in Shape

All eyes are on Jenna Bush as she readies for her wedding, still unscheduled. Insiders are expecting her to step up workouts at the Sports Club adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel near the White House where she sometimes trains. It's also the club used by Washington's major stars, including cabinet secretaries like Treasury's Henry Paulson, major lobbyists, lawyers, and TV reporters. But some pals think she may go a more private route and hire the trainer who works with her mother, Laura, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

Forget Florida as Dems Look West

The old story that presidential elections are won in Florida and Ohio appears to be wilting under the growing Democratic strength in the mountain West. Democratic strategists tell us that with Florida tilting more Republican and Ohio going the other way, it is states like Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico that will be the battlegrounds in 2008. Among the reasons, say Dems: a growing Hispanic population that leans left and independent voters angry with a fat and pushy federal government. "We've got a lot more places to play in 2008 than Florida and Ohio," says a party strategist.

If Once Wasn't Good Enough...

Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign isn't only a boon for conservative fundraisers and critics. Those who have a bone to pick with Bubba or his wife are also planning to use the campaign to air their grievances again. First up: Kathleen Willey, who alleges that President Clinton pawed her in the Oval Office, then bullied her so that she wouldn't tell. Clinton denies her story. Willey adds to her allegations in Target: In the Crosshairs of Bill and Hillary Clinton. Why write it now? "I was so misrepresented and maligned and I know it was a while back, but I think this is a real important time with elections coming up to tell this story."

Sorry Vlad, Topless Fishing Isn't Hip

It may be the rage in Siberia, but pictures of Russian President Vladimir Putin's fishing topless drew ughs in Washington. A Bush adviser says, "I'd rather have a flawed view of his soul than a clear view of his pecs!" "Man boobs," sneered another. GOP presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee tells us candidly: "While I am impressed with the fact he can get out and go fishing, the shirtless photo doesn't do anything for me. Now, if it was a picture of Scarlett Johansson, that would be another story."

Well it’s nice to know that Chertoff has fans somewhere outside of Mexico. /s

That means that the Julie Myers could move up from ICE Director to Homeland Security. Oh, you've never heard of Julie Myers? You'd think that with illegal immigration being in the news she would make herself known. Uh...no. She wasn't qualified for the job when hired, and hasn't been heard from since.

Uh, no thanks!

“Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has been the Bush administration’s point person on its comprehensive immigration reform bill, which collapsed in the Senate on Thursday night. Chertoff talks with NPR’s Robert Siegel about where the White House will go from here.”

Arkansas can probably be added to the Dem column. Huckabee (R) couldn't deliver it to a GOP successor and all major state offices are in the D column. There are doubts that Huckabee could even carry the state, if he did win the GOP nomination.

Shock and awe. Gonzales out and Chertoff in?

“Doing a heck of a job, there, Brownie!” was heard just before Michael D. Brown got thrown under the bus and Chertoff was put in his place. Expect a similar phrase, “Doing a heck of a job, there, Gonzo!” for our friend Alberto.

Followed by a loud “THWAP! Thump-thump.”

The bus will not even slow down.

Trading Chertoff for Gonzales?

Not sure that is such a good thing. Chertoff seems relatively incompetent as SecHSD.

They are both incompetent so you really won’t notice any difference.
Sad, isn’t it?

Julie Myers appointment was an embarrassing example of Republican nepotism.

I’m not sure that Chertoff would be confirmed. The DemocRATS would do anything to score political points at Bush’s expense, and some Sentate Republicans have qualms about Chertoff.

This is the funniest statement of several in the article. The "growing Hispanic population" mentioned in the article is mainly illegal (which is a tacit admission by the "Dems" that they plan on registering as many illegal voters as possible); and the idea that voters "angry with a fat and pushy federal government" may trend Democrat had me rolling on the floor.

Maybe because Martinez is anti-American.

If you wanted to find a worse AG than AG, Chertoff would be the top pick.

Oh come on...she's married to Chertoff's Chief of Staff. It's no wonder she can follow the Administration's policy of "don't ask, don't tell, don't look, don't prosecute, don't do anything" for securing the border. Doesn't take a lot of gray hair do bury things.

On the bright side, you hear more people taking notice of the Administration's failure to uphold its duties.
