EUGENE -- A 33-year-old man who was trying to hang himself from a construction crane not only failed but then survived an 85-foot fall when his rope broke.

According to a news release from Eugene police, the man had climbed out on a construction crane at a job site at 265 W. Eighth Ave. about 6:30 this morning and wrapped a flag from the crane around his shoulders.

Eugene police, firefighters and emergency medical workers were called, and members of the Crisis Negotiation Team also came to the scene.

They were trying to start talking to the man when he put a noose around his neck and hung himself from the crane.

But the rope failed and the man dropped, hitting plywood and wooden trusses, but narrowly missing construction materials, rebar and concrete posts. Police said the man was then taken to a local hospital. He was conscious, but the nature of his injuries wasn't yet known.

A little mending, a little therapy, and he'll walk out of the hospital a new man. And get run over by a bus.

Isn't all that far fetched in Eugene.

Ha! Eugene, and Oregon. Either liberals or gun nuts, or sometimes both. Don’t forget it was a Democrat legislature in the early ‘90s who passed shall issue in Oregon, and our Democrat governor is more pro gun than California’s Republican.

I’ll be bridging the gap a little bit next week, going down to Paso Robles on Monday for business and coming back Wednesday (TG we’ll be taking the jet, not commercial). Dunno which to expect in PRB, liberal or conservative? And where does one go to get the black oak barbecue I hear about?

Good for you ~ Idaho is one of my favorite states; the only thing missing is the Pacific Ocean. After the last election when liberals took over both state houses I considered moving to Idaho. I hate to move, though.

My dad did some prospecting, he actually had a small gold mine near 29 Palms, back in the 30’s. :) I never got the gold bug.

You are 100% right about Eugene, being Berkeley North. We lived in Berkeley for 28 years before moving here.

I live in the Southwest corner of Eugene, the U of O is in the Eastern part of Eugene, most of the ultra left-wing wackos live in that area.

If you ever get in the area again, let’s get together for a cup of coffee. :)

Be Ever Vigilant!

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that he is making a cry for help.

And he still only got a 7.5 from the Bulgarian judge.

Drop by (after hunting season) Dave and I’ll take you up to some BLM land where you can fire the Bushmaster to your hearts content ~ or any other firearm I have. :)

I used to live just down the "hill" (Cuesta Grade) from Paso and 15 years ago it was pretty conservative. But even then it was beginning to lots of big city wine buffs (mostly liberals) because of the many vineyards and wineries there. Rich L.A. and S.F. liberals are now retiring there to try to live what I call the "Sunset Magazine lifestyle."

You may be thinking of Santa Maria-style tri-tip BBQ cooked over oak which is a specialty of those parts (Ronald Reagan loved it and served it while he was in the White House). The best I know of is in Nipomo and that's quite a haul from Paso. Just inquire locally. Mention BBQ'd tri-tip and they'll know what you want.

Santa Maria-style tri-tip BBQ cooked over oak...

Yeah that's the stuff. One of the guys I work with comes from that area and says the stuff was basically invented there, says it's good stuff and he knows his tri-tip. I'll ask the guys at the store in PRB where to go in town, don't have time to do a lot of running around. The Jet is dropping me off at the airport 8:30 AM and I'll pretty much be working until we leave Wednesday. The pilots get to hang around for the whole time and go do whatever they want (I am in the wrong line of work I guess).

Got my BA in Business “Fighting Duck” feathers in ‘66 and flew away, never to nest there again. I watched the metamorphosis take place as I was leaving...nasty comments to those of us in uniform on ROTC day. But what’s interesting was that it seemed to me that the school/instruction changed because of the students, rather than changed the students.

My cousin went to U of O around that time, journalism major, maybe a couple of years behind you. Was editor of the Oregon Daily Emerald for a time. Now he’s back in DC area and is a bigwig with Reuter’s. And he took a left turn along the way.

I don’t know, was to young to understand the left shift in academia when it was happening but do remember the the media accounts of student protests. Only thing I can say about it’s origin is that some number of leadership figures (perhaps McCarthy’s commie plants?) began the student activism movement, it did not come from their parents. And as those activist students graduated and entered academic professions themselves, they brought their politics with them.

The leftist crowd in local politics in Eugene right now are the middle aged of that generation, somewhere between my age (49) and yours (I’m guessing about 63). The gen-Xers and younger seem to be more conservative and perhaps when they come to represent the larger part of academia we will see another shift.
